I`m trying to figure out the math and try to save moneyI think the more feed I get ,the cheaper it gets. But I heard that the food spoils easily so I plan to buy feed at a monthly basis.? I plan to get about 10 laying chicks. The starter is sold in 10 and 50 pound bags. How long will the 50lb last? How long will the 10lb last?

Mine didn't spoil between chickie batches, but I warn you, they eat far more than one can imagine, and they drink like a man in the desert who found water. It will seriously shock you. Chick start is not very expensive either. We had 6 chicks the first time and 4 the second time and went through about 37 lbs of feed. YES 37 lbs.

As long as you keep your feed dry it will be fine. There are a lot of factors on how much feed your chicks will go through. Type of bird temperature when moved to the outside, and controlling waste. Free ranging your chicks when old enough will cut down on feed drastically. I use brooder tractors when they reach 4 weeks.

I go through 50# every other week, but then I have 45 chicks ranging from 1 to 12 weeks on starter/grower.

Well you cans ee from my post, we go in small batches - we don't have much room. But they DO eat alot.

I go through about a #50 bag for 50 chicks and 2 turkeys a week. It isnt expensive here though, about $13.00 a bag and i figure with all these chicks i will hopefully

get 40 hens

and that will cut down my bill no matter how you look at it. We currently scramble around 20 eggs a day for breakfast! (give or take a few)
