Last Saturdays, Fordland, MO

The Small Animal Swap is held in Fordland, Missouri on the last Saturday of each month starting in March and running through October. The swap begins at approximately 7am and begins to slow down around noon, but the event lasts as long as buyers and vendors are available. Admission is free for those who come to look and buy, though vendors must pay a $5.00 fee to sell at the event.

For those unfamiliar with the area, Fordland is located 20 miles east of Springfield, Missouri on Highway 60. The swap meet takes place at the corner of FF Highway and Saddle Club Road in Fordland on the grounds of the Fordland Saddle Club. The event is held outside, rain or shine. There is a concession stand offering both food at the event, and restrooms are available on site. For more questions or vendor information please call Ronnie at (417) 839-6382.

chickens, geese, turkeys, ducks, guineas, sheep, goats, draft and light horses, cats, herding dogs, livestock guard dogs, bees, mealies... (what, no cows? no llamas?), a very cool hubby who takes it all in stride and builds what they need.

there are several others that are general livestock auctions, or goat and sheep, that occasionally have poultry.  let me know if you're interested in those and I'll post them too.

My daughter and I just recently attended a swap in Missouri. It was our first. I guess I'm wanting to know if there are any general rules of etiquette. We tried to ask sellers questions about the animals we were interested in, other buyers would butt right in front of us, shove money at sellers and buy animals right from under us. I even had one lady, not the owner, tell me that the birds in the cage were turkeys, when in fact they were silkies. I knew better and purchased five. Does anyone have thoughts, advice, etc. for me?

Just like anywhere public these days, many people have no manners whatsoever.    Best to ignore them and go on your way.    A polite vendor will tell them to wait their turn but also won't want to loose any sales.

People just aren't as nice in general as they used to be.    don't let them ruin your day or your attitude.     Act the way you would like others to act but be firm and stand up for yourself.      Just choose your battles wisely.   Most chickens aren't worth a big hassle...........there are plenty more out there.

4 beloved small mutt rescued dogs. Raise Seramas since 2010 and starting on Calico bantam Cochins fall 2012.  Spring of 2013,  I now have a trio of bantam  partridge plymouth rocks and a pair of bantam silver penciled rocks.   Over 50, living on acreage in SW Missouri with lots of DIVINE DANCING BANTAMS!    SERAMA EGGS AVAILABLE, PM me. Seramas available spring 2013.

This is how we handled it. I was trying to be careful, ask questions, and spend wisely. The last thing I wanted was to get home and have buyers remorse. Thanks for the advice.

Went to the Jacob's Cave swap meet Saturday. Our first time there. We got there just before 9am and stayed until just after 3pm. I know, not a long day, but we accomplished just about everything we wanted to. Sold everything but some of the small babies. If you were there, we they the van way in the back with the pet turkey. She sat next to me some and then decided she wanted to sit on my lap. She was kind of a last minute thing, but turned out to be the high lite for a lot of folks that wanted to pet her.

As for the swap meet itself, we were impressed. It was huge compared to some of the others we have been to. There were Porto-potties all over the place, and we saw them empty them at least once during the day. And they were clean on the inside. There were trash cans everywhere and the bags were changed regularly. There were lots of people there, and I was amazed at how often people would say, "We just got here" all day long. So there were always new people arriving. We left early because we sold all our older animals and no one seemed interested in the week old babies.

The plan right now is to go to the next one in October, probably go up Friday afternoon, spend the night and then come home Saturday evening. Depends on how sales go. So I have until then to get things ready for the next one. Hope to see you there.
