Time Of Day Hens Lay Eggs?

Hi,

I don't believe they will lay eggs after dark, but when I had a heat lamp on in the winter, I had one lay as late as 8:30 PM! Thankfully, those are all out now.

I love to hear their chattering and carrying on, but they can be loud. But as another poster mentioned, definately not as loud as a barking dog.

Good luck with the chickens!

They can lay at any time of the day. I went out the other eve around 7pm to get eggs. One of the girls was in a nest box. When I had been out a little earlier I did an egg count. When I went back out about a half hr later, sure enough there was another egg in that nest.

What I love (or one of the many things I am loving!!) about chickens is that they don't have to live on a formula like the production penned ones... So, if I get an egg at 6am vs. 5pm, so be it!

About the egg laying song - it is hilarious! I have two hens who bock, bock, BRAWWWWWK! for a few choruses after they lay. The roo, a GL Polish, counters their BRAWWWWK! with one of his own, right on the beat. He comes running over to congratulate them too on a job well done... so cute.

In my neighborhood everyone has lawn services who's mowers and blowers hummmmmmmm far too often... I figure the crowing roo and the brawwking hens are a slice of what life SHOULD be like, if you are lucky enough to experience it!

Enjoy your chickens!

I noticed the 'egg song' yesterday (I have had my girls for a little over a week and they aren't laying regularly yet) but one of my ameraucana (I think that is what she is) laid her egg and cackles for a few minutes in the coop then ran out to the run the let everyone know. I live in the country and it seemed loud to me. but she has been quite vocal too. I will definitely know when she lays an egg, for sure.
