baby chicks and antibiotics in their water

Well I was at the feed store this weekend and all the chicks had Sulmet in the water. So it's possible that they really meant antibiotics. I didn't ask why. I was in a hurry and not buying any chicks.

Lively bee's you did the right thing because your birds were sick.

The original poster is talking about giving antibiotics just to give it to them.

By the way how do you know they had Pneumonia? Just wondering if you had a nercropsy done to find out what was killing them. TIA

I only use mediated feeds in the fall when the weather starts getting dry because there can be flare ups of cocci in the dirt. Other than that, I don't even like antibacterial soap. Antibiotics are used so much that a lot are becoming ineffective. In class we tested the bacteria off our noses for resistance to different antibiotics, and it was found for the four we tested, which included penicillin, that they were resistant in more than 90% of the students. It's a hard decision to make some times, but I prefer to only use antibiotics as soon as I see signs of illness, and not as a preventive measure, as if something did still live through it, you'd lose everybody.
