Just met my sister yesterday and picked-up our 5 one-week-old chicks yesterday.

Just need to know if pine shavings are ok. I've got them in a wooden box with shavings on the bottom.

Thanks,

Pine is good, just dont do CEDAR, since they are week old, should already know how to eat food, and not chips.

i used newspaper at first and what a mess!! It was horrible! I then broke down and bought shavings and they are wonderful! Clean up is soooooo much easier! I use one of my kids sandbox rakes and rake just the poopy and wet shavings into one of those large feed scoops. I am able to salvage the still-clean shavings that way. very easy.

I used only a puppy pad the first week, then I introduced the pine shavings.

Under my goslings, I still use a puppy pad under the shavings to help with the moisture they leave in their poo.

I'm using pine Equine Bedding Pellets. Too big to eat when fresh, and by the time they get wet and start breaking into sawdust, the chicks will have found real food.
