Barred Rocks Typically nice chickens? - Page 2

I'm a bit predjudiced, since Barred Rocks were *my* first chickens --- but every one I've raised have been friendly and good layers.
All the roos have been pleasant. 
Right now, I have 15 Barred Rock hens with 2 BR roos.
Speaking of BR's, I just set 36 BR eggs this evening.
Back to the question...  Yes, Barred Rocks are typically good natured

I used to have a barred and she was soooo friendly. Probobly how the neighbors dog got her. She died along with 3 others. My husband wants another barred but we are now at our limit of 12 so i have to wait. erinm

...I looked behind me to see the whole flock following me. I went in to get a treat to reward them and when I went back out I noticed that they needed more feed. So at least they know where their bread is buttered so to speak. LOL
You have trained them. Chickens are fast learners, part of adapting to  life where everything wants to eat you.

Do they like you? Do they sit around in the coop, talking about how wonderful you are, how they cant wait to see you in the morning? Naahhh!

But as you noted, they do know that following you means a treat.

My biggest roo is a plymouth barred rock,he hasnt gotten his spurs in yet but once in a while hell hit ya in the back if your of gaurd.You can pick him up if you get him and hes fine.I have six straightruns that are barred,they are very sweet and let you hold them.They are the last to go into the coop at night so I have to go looking for them and pick them up and bring them in.

My BR is one goofy rotten bird. He eats out of my hand, he'll sit on my lap, he even gives hugs (stretches his neck up on my shoulder when I hold him.) And while our BR hens, Greta and Gerti, can be a little mean sometimes, they're generally a sweet pair.

We have two BR and they are fantastic.

Barred Rocks are the only roos I ever let get in with my layers.  They tend to be gentler and good sherrifs for the ladies.  I do keep their spurs trimmed using dog nail clippers.  I wish I could learn how to twist them off.

This is what I mean by 'pleasant roos'.
Last night, one of my goats tore down the fence between the 'bantam roo pen' and the BR pen.  The BR roos didn't get territorial and fighty with the smaller bantam roos, just ran them in a corner and kept them there.  They don't want to be fighty, they are gentle boys.  Some of the little roos were trying to stand them down --- all spur/flog and no bite, but the 2 BR roos were not effected by their silliness.  Never made a move to fight back --- just kept herding them in the fartherest corner.
If a hen came along and wanted to check out the 'commotion in the corner', the roos ran her back too.

I have a variety myself, I just love my BO and BR... both breeds have the best temperment and very friendly!!! Not to mention their eggs are nice sized and beautiful in color! Enjoy. As for the roo's I couldnt ask for better ones. If there is a situation with the other roos the BR roos will get in between and let that other roo know who they belong too. But they don't attack or fight! They just heard their girls together and keep them protected. My LB and RIR roos are just about the same way. I really dont have any problems except with the polish... oh goodness. Anyways, just thought I would share my experiance with them.
