I have a mutt chick (8 weeks) that has leg feathering. She never preens her leg feathers, and they are getting crumpled, and she bangs them into things and causes the pore/base of the feather to bleed.

Do your feather footed chickens care for their own leg feathers? Or do you have to groom them for them? Do you ever have some whose feathers need trimming because they are clumsy?

I have feather foots and they do groom them but they get beat up real fast. When I first got my rooster (as an adult), he broke a bunch of his leg feathers since the terrain was much different than the lawn he grew up on. I had to pull thoes out. He has since learned and got his feet back together.
 
I have one feather-foot, a black cochin, and she free ranges in the lawn and dirt during the day then perches on a rod in the coop at night. I haven't seen her preen but her foot feathers always look presentable. She is young, only about 19 weeks old. I also have a number of feather-foot pigeons and they all seem to preen their foot-feathers well.

Yes my silkies also keep theirs nice, no mud or gunk in the pen, and they are on lawn most of the time,
a toothbrush, preferably one you dont use is a good tool for feet feathers! or use your mother in law's toothbrush if she gives you grief!!!
