Where Is The Best Place To Live In The USA?

Hi everyone,

I'm from the UK and I have been seriously considering moving to the states...
Therefore I just wanted to start a topic on some of the best places to live and keep chickens in the USA!

I just have a few preferences:

I would love to be somewhere that's fairly close to the coast and woodland (although it's not essential).

I do not want to live in a rough neighbourhood.

The type of property must have a few outbuildings (small barn/stable etc.) and at least 1-2 acres of land as a minimum to grow fruit and veg and to keep animals on such as chickens and possibly goats, pigs, sheep, cows etc.

The property I choose to buy would need to be fairly cheapish (less than $400,000)

Is my dream at all possible and can anyone please suggest some states/areas to start looking?
 
I love North Carolina. I grew up in Florida but could not stand hurricanes anymore. I relocated and could not be happier. Beaches, mountains, plenty of room for chickens.
 
DO NOT come to North Carolina.

It's a terrible place to live. High crime. Dirty air and water. No jobs. Drought. Just awful.

I'm biased, but I think upstate New York is one of the best places to have a small farm in the country. You can still find relatively inexpensive property because we haven't ever had the housing boom that hit much of the rest of the country. There are lots of old established farms for sale, too. We have cold winters, but all seasons are beautiful. The city's not too far away if you want some international culture. I love it! I grew up here, moved away, lived all over, and think this place is perfect.

You can come here... we're losing population and we need you!

On edit: Oh, yeah, it's more densely settled than places out west, so there are lots of towns and farm stands and farmers markets everywhere. Out west you often to have drive long distances... not here. More spread out than England, but less than Wyoming!

Just Kidding, you might want to look in the mid west, no shore line but land prices are great.
Or just come on down are way and see just what its like to be in Heaven.

OOoh, N. Georgia is just like that, too! What a coincidence! Actually, I'd rather have someone from the UK than someone ELSE from Florida, LOL. No offense, of course.​
 
My vote, living in Texas, would be northwest coast; Northern California north to Washington state. The Matsu valley in south cental Alaska is wonderful too, but land prices are probably astronomical. I don't know about the land prices in coastal Oregon and Washington, but the climate is mild and it has a good growing season. I think the areas around Seattle and Portland are expensive, but there is a lot of real estate between the two.

About your other post, hunting laws vary state by state. I think you can go to each state's Fish and Game section. I also believe that in most states game is considered public property, and you must have a liscense even to hunt on your own land. Here in Texas, most of the land is privately held, but you still need a liscense.
