Which chicken breeds make the best "pet" chickens?

Thread Starter

I wondered what your opinions were about who makes the best chicken pets.  I'm looking for some chicken breeds that will be accepting of being pet and held.

Proud owner of 1 DH, 2 DDs, 1 DS, 13 horses, 1 lizard, 7 rabbits, 5 goats, 5 ducks, 5 turkeys, 3 guinea, 5 cats and too many dogs and chickens to mention.

You just never know what I'M gonna drag in!

I believe that it you start working with them when they are chicks, you could probably get just about any type......I've learned that you can train chickens (to a point).

I just love my Buff Orps. And Cherokee's right - love them up every day from the beginning and they'll be very docile.

My friends all think I've flown the coop....

I have had MANY breeds, but, in my opinion, seramas are definitely the best. I have one "purring" on my shoulder now.

welcome-byc  It's difficult to say what you should get for breeds. If you asked a lot different people you would probably get many different answers. Some may agree on the breeds. Also do you want dual purpose or just good egg layers. Here is a great reference book, Gail Damerow's 'Storey's Guide to Chickens' is an excellent resource, as well as this web site which is an excellent source of information.

These sites are especially helpful in selecting breeds.
