At chickenhwak.... I only have Buff Brahmas, and am just learning all the different colors.  I love the look of those... Buff Laced are buff and white... what are those called?  Thanks for the info.  I would love to expand my color range of my flock, and am incubating some of my own flock.  Anybody have some reccomendations on blood lines?

I love my Buff Brahmas!  There always seems room for more :)

4 Buff hens, 2 light Brahma hens, 1 Rooster, countless chicks, 3 EE's, 6 Buff Laced Brahmas 5 GLB, a flock of silkies........ and more on the way :)

Love the pick Gary.  Have to agree with everyone else, everything is better with bacon!! Plus a firearm to boot with it....thats a picture of awesomeness for alot of folks!

How are your Silver Laced doing Gary?  I have read all of the threads associated with your birds for the past few years.  It is all fascinating to say the least.  I have enjoyed all of the photos along the way and applaud your efforts in making some great looking BIG Brahmas.

Just because some of us are silent at times, do not think that your efforts lack our appreciation for what you have done with this project.

For those of us who have worked on projects over time we have a great appreciation for your accomplishents!

I bought some Silver Laced Brahma hatching eggs from a farm in Ohio in Dec, and ended up with 3 pullets. Since I don't have a male bird other than a Light, I suspect that the cross would produce males and females with incomplete lacing. I'm wondering if breeding the incompletes together or back to the fully laced birds would produce at least a few fully laced birds? Or is either option so inadvisable that I should just find a silver laced rooster? By the way Big Medicine, I think the SLB hen is the queen of all poultry.thumbsup.gif

Using a light male over a silver laced female will produce chicks that strongly resemble lights with just a bit of lacing, or specs showing. If just breeding from these chicks it has been my experience it will take three to four generations to get back to proper lacing, providing you produce sufficent numbers to select from, and only use the best laced representatives of their generation.

Using Henks calculator, breeding one of the cross males back on the laced females, 25% of the resulting chicks will potentially aguire the required genetic package for proper lacing.

Now a couple things to keep in mind. Color/pattern is only part of what makes a breed/variety. Type should be foremost in selecting breeders. Often you might be able to get there quicker if selecting on color/pattern only, but without proper type, you just end up with a pretty chicken. This has been stated on here many times by some folks we should be listening to.  So the quality of the light used in this cross will have a direct effect on the type of all resulting generations.

Ideally one should be able to dip a good Brahma in paint, covering color/pattern of feather, leg color, somehow hide comb, and leg feathering, and that bird's build should still scream Brahma. From the graceful arch of the neck, the tilt of a hens back, the regal stature and size, the broad skull with that "Mister, I could kick your butt" glare. These are all things that distinguish Brahmas from just another pretty chicken, and what we as breeders must be aware of, and strive for in our pens.

The youngsters on the right are the result of a light over silver laced.

Hi, where does one go about buying buff laced or any of the "new" brahma colors (LF)?  What are the most reliable sources?

I am in WI and know Dan Powell was the originator of the buff laced, but can't find any contact info, found a website that says he's not in business anymore.

Help!  I'd love to get some fancy Brahmas.  I have some dark Brahmas and just love their big easy going personalities and watching them "lope" across the pasture to beg for treats.

please email me if possible.  dbarjacres@live.com

thanks

Thanks Gary, your birds are amazing. I have 5 Silver Laced Brahmas hatched out. I also have 3 Dark Brahma pullets about 8 weeks old, not looking to bad.Still looking for some nice Light Brahmas. Saw some eggs on E-bay from Annville, PA but it looks like the rooster might have vulture hocks, I might contact them to see if they can post more pics. Anyone know about Cedar Creek Hatchery? Their Light Brahmas look so so?
