What are the chances a brahma capon would raise chicks? Next year I plan on crossing my buffs with the lights I am hatching so I figured I would caponize the roosters.

Hello I live in Indiana (Franklin County) I am looking for a couple of Brahma hens. . . .does anyone close of any they would like to sell?

Define "raise". Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if a capon is able to reproduce? A capon is a male with his testicles removed.

On crossing the Buffs and Lights. It can be done. I considered it with my Bantams a few years back. There are plenty of good Buffs and lights around. I would recommend you find the best you can of both varieties and stay within the variety. You will have issues with several generations in your male offspring. Gary put out some good info a few pages back about crossing lines even in the same variety. I would think those issues might be amplified crossing the varieties. My buddy Greg Williams did do it with the Bantams and greatly improved the Lights. However, his genetic knowledge would at least approach Gary's. He (Greg) advised me against it(buffxlight), and he and Chad(Spence/Williams) gave me some excellent typed Lights. I have built my light line on those birds.

Hopefully Gary can decipher my mumbo-jumbo and put it in terms that can be understood. Another of his many talents.

By raise I mean I hatch chicks and let the capon have the chicks and raise them. The main reason I wanted to cross my buffs with some lights is so I could get bigger buffs. I also found out it gives the buffs better color. I realize the roosters will be trash and that is why I would caponize them. Figured I better make the best use of them.

I have never heard of anyone using a capon to raise chicks??? For Pete's sake, its hard to get a hen to take chicks that are not her's.

The males are not exactly trash. They could be used in a breeding program providing they had excellent type. I think they could be bred to either variety(buff or light) and throw 50/50 females. That is what I recall, it might not be entirely accurate. The Buff/Light cross would be used to improve type. I have not heard of it used to improve color. I learn something new every day. It is just easier starting out...to keep things a simple as possible. Feeding big birds is expensive.

I read on here some where that the males will throw literally everything. Buff hens and roosters,light hens and roosters, and the odd ball roosters. By the way I did read in my caponizing book that some capons will raise chicks. I might breed one of the odd ball roosters just to see what happens. But that wouldn't be until next year or the year after.

I stand corrected. Like I said, I learn something new every day.  I just breed and exhibit a few Bantams.
