Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....

Sk8inChick(en),
The difference in feathering is slight, but the comb and wattles are very noticeable. As they age, the difference in the feathering will be more noticeable.I can never have too many chickens. The large breeds are my favorite and I have a weakness for Brahmas.

post #4053 of 62748/4/12 at 5:10amReally? You all are saying a five month old Light Brahma with no color at all in the saddle is a male. IF you are correct(I'm not convinced) it does not speak well for the state of hatchery "Brahmas". Five months is too old not to be showing color. Not even considering the lack of color, neither bird has saddle feathers that could even remotely be labled pointed? again....Really?

I've had a few roosters that did not show until six months. The only noticeable part was the comb. I'm not saying this is the case. It just looks to have a large comb for a hen and I was just describing what to look for in the future. I never said that there were noticeable saddle feathers.I can never have too many chickens. The large breeds are my favorite and I have a weakness for Brahmas.

That was my attempt at explaining what to look for in the future. I should have been more clear.I can never have too many chickens. The large breeds are my favorite and I have a weakness for Brahmas.

Quote:Okay, I understand now. :) Like I said, I'm definitely not an expert, but I'm eager to learn what I can about Brahmas, even if mine are just hatchery birds.
I see what you're talking about now. The main thing I noticed was the comb and wattles and I didn't see anything telltale in the feathers.
But now I understand what you meant; the pointy feathers may show up later if it is a roo.
Thanks! :)

post #4059 of 62748/4/12 at 5:31pmhi all. i am new here, was doing a search about vulture hocks. i read up on the last few pages and if anyone has time - - can you tell me if vulture hocks are a problem for brahmas? as in, are they painful, do they cause limping, anything like that. i dont show, so i dont necessarily care about being DQ'd.
also, i was really hoping these guys were girls. but i am pretty sure they are in fact cockerels. they are both 5 months old. what do you think?
THANKS
