Our Hoop House/chicken tractor - Page 28

very nice job

Here is our partially constructed hoop coop.  It is going to be 2 rooms.

The far wall has galvanized siding.  It has an insulating layer to keep it from heating up like a tin can.  One half will be covered this way, and the other half will have hardware cloth with clear corrugated panels.  There is hardware cloth on the ends, too, but not at the top yet.

The outside will look kind of like an old chicken barn:

We had planned to use corrugated aluminum instead of galvanized, because that is what the local Home Depot had.  A few weeks later, when DH went to purchase, they no longer had aluminum, but galvanized instead.  Same price.  It is heavier, but DH is going to haul this with a tractor, and he is not concerned about weight.

Cattle panel is brilliant! I wanted to make a hoop run, but wasn't sure what to use for the hoops, that would be inexpensive and aesthetic. Where would one procure a cattle panel?

tractor supply has them.. home depot also has them listed on their website.. just not sure if they are available everywhere so you would need to check locally

This has been so helpful! I am always looking for a way to add onto our existing coops and this is a great way. The step by step pictures are very helpful! Thanks!

thats so cute but you should use a flat two by four for a perch. Chickens feet are better suited for perching on a flat board. Plus its more comfy for them.thumbsup.gif

i've heard all kinds of opinion about perches. From this article, http://labanimals.awionline.org/pubs/cq02/Cq-chick.html, it says: "Chickens prefer roosts that are large [5 cm diameter] rather than small, and square or round rather than triangular in shape (Muiruri et al., 1990)." 5 cm = about 2 inches.

maybe we need a thread to discuss this subject.

Love your hoop coop, naturespace! It looks like some of those sweet Basque chickens will be spending time there. smile.png What are the dimensions?
DH has not made any recent progress, as work weeks are busy, and weekends have been windy (not great for working with large panels!). I really want my chicks out of their not-so-secure carport though, so the pressure is on.
I also love the chicken cut-outs!
