Gnats have killed my 2 grown silkies and my frizzle. I guess there`s a reason chicken feathers are made like they are. My other chickens seem bothered, but nowhere near dead. I guess all my new hatched frizzles, sizzles and silkies will be up for sale to someone without so many gnats.

They're called buffalo gnats or turkey gnats. They are blood eaters like mosquitos and can bleed one to death or get so many in their airways that they suffocate. I lost some young ones last year, but the gnats aren't near as bad this year, so I didn't realize these particular chickens were in trouble. They were staying in their coop, which is normal because the gnats don't go in the dark so much, so I didn't realize how bad off they were. They are a big threat to wild turkeys, and can even kill deer when there are a lot of them.

OMG! Isn't there something you can do to get rid of them? DE? Maybe some 7 dust sprinkled around their coop and yard?
I saw some black fly things bugging my chickens the other day. It's been really wet here and I was thinking maybe it was because of the poop and mud that they were hanging around. Now I'm nervous. I'm going to put some 7 dust out tomorrow and head to the Co-op on Monday and pick up some DE.
 
Vanilla seems to be the best repellant, and putting fabric softener dryersheets around the coop and if its where you can put a fan, if not too cold they will sit in front of the fan to keep them off. Some people use skin so soft. If I had realized how bad they were I might have been able to do something. All my others, even my youngsters still confined to the coop seem to be doing ok. The rain and colder temps have them knocked down for now, tomorrow I will have to check everybody out and see if I need to start an anti=gnat campaign. I hope wal-mart has plenty of fabric softener sheets.
 
try some good old fashioned fly paper and a bug zapper. there are organic insect repellants based on garlic that come in a hose end sprayer.
