Diarrhea in chicks - Page 2
I've got four chicks, now 5days old. They are my first hens in my life! I've had them for 1 and half days. Three of them are fine, running around, eating, drinking, cheeping, and sleeping under the ecoglow brooder. The 4th however is getting me worried. On day one she drank water, and I saw her eating food with the others (I'm giving them fermented chick starter, unmedicated) but she spends much more time under the ecoglow than the others, and today I took her out from under there and dipped her beak in the water, because I was worried she might be dehydrating under there. She drank 2 or 3 swallows and then ran back under the ecoglow. Earlier today I noticed she had some poop stuck on her feathers near her butt, and I wiped that off, and immediately after she did a very liquid poop.
I have put a drop of ACV in the water, and plan to make sure she gets a drink of water by dipping her beak in it every hour today. Is there anything else I can do?
...it's too late. I found her dead under the brooder heater about an hour ago...
I'm pretty new to all this and I can't say what happened to your chick but I might suggest keeping things simpler next time. We raise ours in plastic totes for the first 4-6 weeks. They get pine shavings on the bottom and a heat lamp clamped to the top of the tote, plain fresh tap water and Purina medicated starter-grower feed. That's it. Nothing more. No treats and no outside time. Change the shavings as needed. We've yet to lose a chick (after first 24 hours of delivery from hatchery) or have any illnesses. I'm wondering if the time on your lawn or some of the treats caused the issue. Keeping them confined and providing only water and medicated starter really lessens the chances of problems, IMO.
Others with more experience will surely chime in; but I wanted to extend my condolences and offer that advice for your next batch of chicks.
