I've heard that noise!! One night I was woken up from a dead sleep by very loud, VERY close screaming/yowling. Every hair on my body stood straight up and my heart started pounding.
It continued yowling for about 10 minutes until it got too far away to really hear well. It traveled down the creek towards my neighbors house. They didn't hear a thing (they are hard of hearing so I'm not surprised) My outside dog who barks at everything, started barking when it first yowled but he only barked once and went right back to bed!! He was smart enough to not mess with it. He usually trees any and everything that moves.
