Strictly pet chickens! Anyone??

Our chickens are definitely pets with the benefit of eggs.

Once I decided that I wasn't okay killing and eating our little rooster, I actually made a vow to not eat any factory-farmed meat from now on. If I'm not okay eating a chick that I know had a humane life (just because I'm too "chicken" [hehe] to do "the deed"), then I shouldn't be any more okay eating an animal that lived a horrible filthy life out of my site.

Because of the price of humanely raised meat, you can imagine how much my consumption of it has gone down!!! :)

I support those who use their flock for food - they are showing with their money that they don't support factory farms just like I am. They just have more guts (and probably more birds) than I have!

To each his own, but interesting question!

I love the "Deed" term.

Our chickens are pets with BENE's eggs and I don't see us harvesting any for freezer camp. We too are not hunters. I have never taken an animals life willingly - Suicidal chipmunks who ran under my car as I drive out don't count if I wasn't aiming for them right?

I know my husband, while he is a pretty swell guy, would freak out if I ever asked him to harvest the chickens. It is not in him. I would have to do it. He insists we don't name the chickens in case we ever eat them. I see our chickens living long lives after they are done laying eggs so long as they are not lost to predators.

I think hunting is good and harvesting your chickens is good too. Maybe if I had raised a bigger flock from babies but I got attached and so did my family - AND Andy too but he won't admit it! He asks whenever traveling - "And how are the chickens today?"

Sometimes, I am tempted to answer - "delicious roasted with rosemary and olive oil"......but he would not appreciate that answer....

He never inquires about the dogs or cats so I have to wonder if he is fond of the chickens

My chickens are pets first, eggs once we get them will be an added benefit. I have grown to love them like I love my dog. They are fun to watch and I find them very relaxing. They will be able to live out their lives eggs or not.

That is a good question. It's only my hubby and me - at the beginning, I'm guessing those four will be laying more than we need. So I expect at least a few years to go by before having to give someone their walking papers!

Well, hopefully we can relate to each other! My hen is 100% pet! I honestly wish that she didn't EVEN lay eggs, because it's hard on a chickens body to continually produce eggs. She is a house-chicken and lives indoors, 24-7. Of course we romp around on the yard together! But I would never leave her unsupervised outside. She is free range in my house, shares food with me, snuggles with me in bed while I read and sleeps on my pillow at night. She's like a dog (for all those people out there who cannot fathom this idea). She will not be eaten, or given away, she is my baby girl. I don't see what the fuss is about having a house-chicken. No different that owning another other kind of bird indoors. I also have some parrots, so what's the difference? One perches and ones a ground dweller... that's about it. My chicken is capable of showing more love and personality that my dog. But most people, aka the norm, is to keep chickens as livestock. Doesn't mean that people out there don't love their livestock as they would a pet, but it's slightly different. I love my hen because she loves me. I don't expect anything from her (eggs), I just want her to be happy and healthy. Which she is. True pet chickens are the way to go!

We WILL NOT be eating our either. Now from time to time we might tease the kids but no eating the chickens. Eggs yes chickens no, The unwanted extra roos we have well they may be somebodys dinner

. That I have no control over because they have to go we have to many roos to our hens and the poor hens suffer. Fluffy the rooster well I made the kids change his name to Mr. Fluffy he stays and there is one other roo that gets to stay. The other three are going on Craigs list and if not sold to the auction

. But it has to be we have 32 more chicks coming in next week I am sure more roos. But yeah ours are pets and 4-H projects.

Dear Chicken Lovers:

Perhaps you looked already to my post: I have a question to allof you,
where I tell something about my rooster "Elton".

He also visits me, when i'm laid in bed after my work, in order toliberate me from my professional stress. He sits down, onto my chest and remains there for about halfanhour. If I caress him, he beginns to close his eyes and sleep.
When he must leave me again (believe me: my wife is jealous against my pet !), he becomes sad and goes: "hooooo...."
My 18-month-old daughter loves our four chickens and various times tried to sleep within our henhouse.
Now, who is the pet of whom ?
Many people ask me, why I like chickens as that ? My answer:
they are all so funny, even me they make a clown, genius !

Greetings from Brazil:
