Is a staple gun adequate for chicken wire?
Or do I need to use these big old galvanized "poultry netting staples" I saw at Home Depot. Looks like you have to bang each one in with a hammer.
Thanks,
Adam

I use my pneumatic stapler for all kinds of wire to hold it as I stretch it (it's MUCH easier not to have to hammer while you're trying to hold the wire) but then I use regular fence staples to supplement any wiring that will be outside and needs more strength to hold it. Example- I've built indoor brooder enclosures using just the stapler but my dog pen and chicken run were supplemented with the fence staples. Helps keep predators out and pets in. So far so good.

They might be but I just don't feel comfortable with them on their own. Most staples I've used a gun on (either hand or pneumatic) still don't seem that substantial and most of the hand-staple-gun ones have to be smacked with a hammer (even in the softest wood) to get them in all the way.

If it's going to be anywhere a predator can get to it, you should reinforce with the galvanized fence staples.

What lleighmay explained is what I do (and will be doing more) with my fencing. The stapler makes it easy to get the fencing up in place and stretched nice, then it's reinforced to make sure that the staples can't be pulled loose and a predator allowed to slip in.

So I read about a lady that stapled her but not very securely and she lost a good bit of her flock to a raccoon and was pretty devastated. Where they are most likely to pull/tear the wire is in the corners and at the bottom so in these areas you can do one or two things that should make it about as secure as chicken wire could possibly be and provide a good amount of protection for your flock. 1: you can wrap the wire under the frame and up the backside of the board and then staple on the backside and front side and that should keep anything from tearing the stapled wire from the frame. 2: you could staple it to the frame and then nail a 1x2 or a 1x4 pretty tight on top of the wire (so the wire is sandwhiched between the 1x2 and the frame) and that should keep it pretty secure. One thing is for sure: you will have predators. So make sure that wire is as secure as possible.

I do something similar to Dzchicks #2. I rip 3/4" off of the 2x4 that I'm using and then sandwich the wire between the two pieces. It makes it secure and it looks a little more finished. You can kind of see it on the doors to my coop:

We used the staple gun to hold the chicken wire in place, and then used some poultry staples to make sure it stayed in place. The chicken wire isn't going anywhere
