Had to make a revised version for my HUGE ladies with extra panels to cover them further down on their flanks. Smoky's is made from that silver ironing board cover fabric, Skye's is some stiff cotton and we have one made of faux leather for Dusty when she is put back with Suede and the others; she and Dusty were injured by Suede and the saddles I had didn't not cover the critical areas. DH was the machine operator, not me.

Looks like I'll have to make an extra small one for my black Ameraucana, Gypsy. She is lean and rangy and even the smallest saddles I own slip off her and hang to the side. So, today, since we are having thunderstorms, yet again, I'll work on a special saddle for svelte Gypsy, who is molting and looks quite like a Turken at the moment, in addition to her bare back. Good thing DH knows how to operate the sewing machine I bought about 25 years ago because I'm useless with machines!

Did you make your own pattern? I didn't find one but found one already made so I just made my own. I started making them this week and it is so neat. I have even got to trade some eggs for making some for a lady on here.

I like your quilted design too. I will have to do that to my next one.

I used the general shape of the saddles I already had, purchased a couple years ago, then added the "flank panels" and made them a tad wider overall for the big girls. When you see a hen's sides literally ripped open wide, then you just have to do something. The old saddles didn't even cover the injured areas and now, they do.

I made mine out of a couple different materials. The fabric is doubled which is out of denim. Then I ironed a fabric patch right in the area that will have the most foot traffic. Then Isewed it in place. I used a surger to go around the entire saddle to sew it all together. Then the elastic I sewen to the neck area. I did use too small of snaps. I have to fnd some larger ones. Only 2 of the girls actually like the saddles. The pictures I took are of some I had removed for washing and a few alterations like new snaps. One of my girls knows how to unsnap them so I hav to come up with something else for hers. As far as the strip in the middle, I used scraps of material that was edging for other projects I had before. I have a pattern if anybody wants a copy. I can email it or send it through the post if you like. No charge. This pattern I have fits my buff, wydonette, barred and rir and sexlink. the Jersey Giant I have't put one on. The boys don't seem to bother her much.
