When do turkeys mate?

My RP's are about 6 months, and I haven't seen anything to indicate they are interested in mating. I haven't seen an egg either. I've had a hard time finding information on turkeys and what to expect and when so I am asking here. Thanks for the info.

Turkeys lay and all the spring AFTER they are hatched.

Edited to say: At least the Blue Slate's do.

So I shouldn't be too worried that there isn't any activity going on? Good to know. My male is showing his stuff off, loves to puff and preen for me, sometimes for her. I really hope that I can hatch some of their eggs. I was told when I got turkeys that I shouldn't expect much that they were just stupid, and pooped everywhere. I now can tell those nay sayers to go away and hush, my turkeys are awesome! They are so much fun, and my chickens love them.

Our turkey breeding and laying starts between April and May. Turkeys typically do not breed like chickens..every day, all day. They are very seasonal.

I've read about saddles, are they really necessary?
It seems as though there are a fair number of people that have turkeys as pets, but there doesn't seem to be a board like this one for them, I wonder why that is?

Our RPs bred without the tom doing too much damage (few broken feathers- tom 24Lb. hen was 11Lb.). If the thirty +pound Slate tom was the Alpha (doing the breeding) a saddle would probably be a good idea.

Our RP hen started laying at seven months (hatched in June `05 - found eggs in Dec.) but no breeding had occurred. The hens got serious in early May (bred at end of April).

Our hens don't go broody until they've determined they have the `right' number of eggs in the nest, so if you don't have them penned, see them wandering off into woods every day about the same time and see them coming in about sundown - it's time follow her out, grab the clutch and relocate her. When they want to nest they start giving out with a lonely sort of `whoot' whoot' 'whoot' and walking off like they're in a trance.

Our Slate hen is STILL brooding (july-who knows?) they are determined girls.

I have a white Tom and a brown/black with bit of white that will be a year old this spring. Lost my white hen last weekend. Think too cold for her. Live in Canada and gets very cold. I love my turkeys. They are very entertaining. I am new to trying to raise my own turkeys but did work on a turkey farm. Why I decided to get them. Also have ducks, chicken, rooster and planning on guinea fowl. Heard “good watch dogs” . All last year my turkeys trying to breed but too young. She gave me an egg every other day. Eggs were very good eating as well. Hopefully get some babies this year. Pics of Tom and 2 hens. Lost the white one.
