do I need to separate baby chicks?

Chickens might eat the eggshell but shouldn't be eating baby chicks that are starting to hatch. Maybe one layed a fresh egg and they were eating that?

Are you sure it's a broody that's sitting on them? (They fluff themselves up to look bigger when they feel threatened and will peck at you if you try to reach into the nest.) If you had to watch to figure out which hen it is, I'm not sure you got the broody one.

If she's sitting on the eggs, I wouldn't worry about a smaller box until after she hatches. She doesn't need much room at all now. Make sure she has food and water though. After she hatches, you might want to put a smaller box in there (or just a pile of hay in the corner) so the chicks will have room to run around.

She has been sitting on eggs for 3 weeks tomorrow. I have never seen her off of them until today.

The hen that I eventually caged up did get all puffy when another chicken walked up to her... but I am not 100% confident it is *her*. The original was a crazy broody. Screamed at you when you came by... this one didn't do that... but was staying on the eggs. Nobody else sat on them either. She was the only one in 30 minutes to do that.

The part of the egg I saw was bloody, so I assume it was a chick egg.
