Which came first: the chickens, or.....the coop? - Page 5

Chicks first here too.  They are now 8 weeks old and still in a spare room. I've had to be very creative about managing that.  The coop will be done this weekend and the run after that.  I will be sooooo happy to finally have them out.  I have been lugging them outside on my days off to a covered dog ex-pen so they can scratch around and spread their wings. My husband is sure I have lost my mind:)  But I'm having fun!

First time flock owner as of April 09, supportive husband, 4 Border Collies & 2 cats. 2 EE's, 2 White Rocks, 2 Black Stars, 2 GLW's, 2 Welsummers, 1 Ameraucana, 2 nigerian dwarf goat doelings  &  1 wild turkey .

After 6 months or so of harping/hen pecking/nagging that I wanted a small backyard flock of my very own I just went out and did it.  I cam e home with about 8 chicks that are supposed to be pullets - then I went back later and got 4 EE chicks.  My hubby was WONDERFUL, and started working on coop plans and buying lumber.  We worked on it for about 3 days as a family and not even a week later it was done.  Good thing too because the "chicks" I bought were nearly feathered out, lol!  I am now on restriction "for awhile til we get the hang of this chicken thing" becuase I went back yet again and got 7 more chicks once the coop was built - he thinks we will have eggs coming out of our ears I suppose!  And, he claims chickens are expensive to feed.....

Hubby brings home the bacon, but my girls and I put the eggs on the table!!
LOVE my LB roo- favorite of the flock.

I would have to say the coop came first!
We had been tossing around the idea of getting chickens, when we moved out of the city. The place we found had a chicken coop, so, naturally, we got chickens! heeheehee!!!  big_smile

6 Wyandottes from Paul's Poultry; BLW, White, BBS.
To fly like a duckling would be to not fly at all.

The only way anything gets done around our house is by sheer necessity. We seem to work better under pressure. So of course the birds  came before the housing. We seem to think we'll have time to get the coop done before they are ready to go outside, but then life happens and they always end up inside longer than I can stand it. th

I had the unused horse stall.

Got the chicks first then converted the horse stall to hold the chicks at 6 wks - then took 2 wks to complete the run.

Got three banties that are now 4 wks old.  Bought a dog house that I plan to convert to a coop/tractor in a month or so when the little ones are ready to go outside.
