I hope you get some answers. smile

I do the coops and the birds, I am still a little afraid of the DE, I know I'm not supposed to breathe it in, but knowing me, just because I'm not supposed to, I will!!! smile I usually have my husband put the DE down for me. He wears a mask and he has been just fine. He gets mad at me when I ask him to do it, he says "what you trying to kill me off! " LOL.  The Sevin and the Adams, no problems I do the coops and the birds.

To treat them as radically as you can without affecting egg eddibility, get some Adams flea and tick dip. Mix it up as directed in a 5 gallon bucket, and proceed to dip EVERY bird on the place. Do it on a warm morning so they have a warm day to dry.

Clean out the litter from the coop and dust heavily with sevin dust. Don`t forget the nests. Replce with clean litter. If showering with hot water and soap, includiing a good shampoo doesn`t make you feel like they are all off of you, do it again.

Like I said, you can eat the eggs and this treatment will get the new ones as they hatch. In fact, you can still smell it for at least a month, but it`s not offensive. Good luck........Pop

I use a shaker, like the ones in restaraunts that contain parmasan cheese, but you can use just your hand. Got it at a restaraunt suply store. Hold the bird upside down by the legs and shake the sevin under wings, tail, on back, breast, etc. Kinda fluff it in with your hand. I try and keep it out of their eye`s, but it won`t hurt them. Doesn`t irritate the vent, eye`s, lungs, anything that I`ve noticed........Pop

lau Shake and bake!! laugig  I'm gonna try that, it sounds like a good idea!  I dunno about the bag though, I would think the chicken would shred a plastic bag while it was attempting escape!
I've also heard that you can give the chickens a dust bath (like a sandbox for kids) and put DE and/ or Sevin dust in with the sand and the chickens will end up doing it themselves... I haven't tried this method yet, I am still working on a roof so the sandbox stays dryish.
Edited for spelling.

Your emoticon smiley faces now have me laughing hysterically!!  I too ahd thought about them shredding a garbage bag and thought I may look for a nylon type of bag that would be more sturdy!  I should be in for quite a day tomorrow.......with any luck though, having Sevin on me from this will make the itchy feeling that I have just thinking abou tit go away!

I use Sevin Dust all the time...sprinkle it all around under the straw when I clean the nests/run/coop, even use it on my counter top for ants and on the floor under the cat litter pans.

Great stuff and never had a problem. I never put a live chicken in a bag though  gig   just sprinkled their feather butts.

Avatar is half of group of Ameraucana chicks looking out of the brooder...Nov.'11. They are much more grown up now. Also have White Rocks, Cuckoo Marans, Andalusians and an assortment of EE's. Oh, and one Australorp hen who knows she is the absolute queen here.

I'm with you about the DE.  Breathing it in.  I use the Sevin dust and you can actually find a poultry dust at Orscheln.  I have spent tons of money on organic dusts and wasted my money.  My coop is so clean and I spend a lot of time with my birds and I still find they get bugs.  Must be nature.  I do the dust once a month just to control it.

Mommy to a 8 yr. old girl, 4 yr. old boy, one fat cat,  one dinky dog, polish, buttercups, hamburgs, waydonettes, and cochins, 10 silkies, a sizzle, Barred Rock and 2 d'uccles.
Need a chicken, duck, goose, parrot diaper or chicken saddle?  I also make harnesses for leashes.  Check in the Everything else for sale. Lovemychix.

My coop is really clean - brand new as a matter of fact plus I change the pine shavings frequently but I think I know what the culprit(s) are.  When I first started out buying chickens and really didn't know what I was looking for/at, I won two hens on an Eggbid auction.  I did quarantine them but again, didn't know how to really check them out.  The man I got them from was not the best person I have ever dealt with and the two hens didn't look nearly as good upon arrival as the others I had gotten - sort of scraggly, etc.  Since it seems to be one of those hens who is infested the worst of all the group, I truly think they came from those two birds.  I still love 'em though and am trying everything I know to have everyone healthy and happy!  Good grief, I am itching again just thinking about this....erggggg...
