Cover the run or not cover the run?

We covered 10 feet with metal roofing (recycled from our house) and the rest of the run will be uncovered except for hardware cloth, giving the girls the option of hanging out in the rain/snow, if they so choose. Hope this helps!

When I was putting together the plan for our coop/run I was trying to figure out how to have cover for the hens without actually covering the run with a solid material so I just fenced in the bottom of our coop so, if they want they can go under it to get out of the weather.

Todd, is the support material for your enclosed run metal tubing or PVC? I cant tell. I would definately use it when I have to replace supports in my run when they rot out.

I have never had a hawk fly in but I started missing a bird about every other night. One morning at about 3 am they woke me up screaming and I chased a large scared owl out of my pen. We finished covering the coop that day. I put old storm windows over part of my run so they can get out of the weather and still be out if they want or they can go in the coop. Once the snow stops they run out to eat it. They will go for snow over their water every time.

I will be using this same stuff when it hits the rainy season. Right now for the summer I'm just using bird netting.

My run is mostly covered with section of plastic corrugated roofing. The remaining small section has chicken wire. The solid roof is good because it gives them some protection from the weather as well as some added protection from any predators. My kids are in the run a lot with the girls so it also provides a little uv protection for them.
