Try to keep the feed separate, if possible. Maybe raise the layer feed up where the chicks can't reach it. The increased calcium in layer feed can cause damage to chicks' kidneys.

Yes, this is the most important reason to keep chicks out of the layer feed. If you feed the pullets starter it wouldn't be as bad as the chicks getting to the layer.

Flock raiser might be a good solution once the chicks are a little older, and you put oyster shell onthe side for the birds that lay.
