I was at the feed store the other day and notice some anklets for the chickens. I didn't think much about them at the time, but now I wonder if I put these on the chickens will it keep them from flying over the 4ft fence I would like to put outside of the run? i tried clipping the wings but that had no effect.

Thanks cybercat, I was just hoping that the bands would work. Before I got the roof on my run ( which is 6' high) They were still getting out.

ID bracelets won't help keep your chickens in, but if you have bands on them with your phone number printed on the outside of the band, then they can be returned to you in the event they wander off - just like a tag on a dog collar. I love using the leather ID bands found here, www.featherware.etsy.com. You can even have your chicken's name printed on them!

Found this post searching for chicken bracelets. I was wondering if there would be any foreseeable issues if we made anklets using zip ties and plastic alphabet beads. Our girls free range, so I have concerns as far as their safety (getting them snagged), as well as their health, would a bracelet harm their skin or hurt them in any way? They do not need them for any reason other than cosmetic. All of our ladies are named, and I have a five year old.... You see where that's going

I'd not do it for dress up cosmetics on the chickens.....sounds like neat idea tho, maybe for dolls or stuffed animals or....anything but live animals.
Good opportunity to teach your young daughter that live animals aren't for dressup ;-)

Bands can irritate the legs, and they can become snagged/tangled...not highly probable, but possible none the less.
Adding beads would increase the possibility of problems IMO.

I use zipties for ID'ing age groups in my flock and they work very well, but they have to be watched carefully, changed out as the birds grow and even after.

Thank you for your input. The beads we were thinking about are very small, but the sole purpose is merely for dress up/cosmetic reasons. I didn't know if it would irritate their legs or how likely it would be that they'd snag it on something in the woods.
