What's pasty butt look like?

So I've been spending an awful lot of time look up the wrong end of a chicken, but I realized today that I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I had some with slightly matted fluff today, and cleaned them as a precaution, but the vent itself was clear.

So I hate to ask for it.... but does anyone have pictures

Shouldn't need a picture. It looks like a dirty chick rear.

Chicken poop on fluff is pretty easy to tell.
 
If you can see the vent and it looks clear you prob just have a chicken with loose poo. If there is poo all stuck around and on the vent that's pasty butt and you will need to soak it and rub it off asap or they can't poo anymore and will most likely die if it's not cleaned off. I have a silkie that has poo all over since I changed her food but it's not by her vent, it's stuck below that. I still soak if off as she keeps picking at it but it would not cause her to die. Good luck...I never thought of taking pics of pasty butt but I will if it happens again to me....pictures DO help you figure out what to look for.
 
Yeah, I know, it's not exactly a "Kodak moment" XD

So I'm just going to keep keeping an eye on. I'd still like to see pics if anyone has them. Well... not LIKE to see, but you get my meaning

I just figured that it was a good idea to keep their fuzzy behinds clean anyway. I soaked their bottoms in warm water for a little bit; then I took the poop off with a paper towel. Momma hen helps, too. She grabs their hind ends and tries to pull the poop off. It doesn't hurt them, but they don't like it! Disgusting as it sounds, I think having a little bit of poop-matted fluff on their behinds is actually helpful; it keeps more poop from getting stuck there, as long as their vent is clear.
We just had our first hatch, and it's amazing how much this BYC place helps!
 
So as I am cleaning my chicks I get to one that had a vent that was caked and had a ball stuck going in. So I soaked it for about 5 minutes to try and get it good and lose. Nothing. Still solid but as I wipe it was like I peeled a scab off of a tumor or something and it started to bleed a little. So I separated her from the other to avoid getting picked on for the night.

Anyone else ever encounter something like this? If so any ideas?
 
I had to soften quite a few "poop balls" last night.

This is what I did. I has a bowl of warm water, some tissues and a small pair of kids scissors. I picked up the chick with it's rear facing my other hand. I just kept dipping my fingers in the water and dabbing it on the chunk of poop. As it began to soften I started to break up the poop ball by gently squeezing it and pinching it with my fingernails. I just kept repeating and most of it came off gradually.

Some of the harder pieces that were sticking out I cut off very, very carefully with the small scissors, making sure that I wasn't anywhere near the skin. Then I just kept wetting and wetting until most of it was gone and the vent was clear. I dried the bottom with a tissue and put them back under their light.

So far, this morning, everything looks good but I'm going to be keeping a close eye on them.

I did a search on this forum for "pasty butt" and found quite a few threads about it.

Thank you for asking this, I was just thinking "is that pasty butt or just dirty butt on one of my chicks??" Whats the difference?

Its also pretty funny the way they do poop, while its being discussed
