I have birds still in various stages of development, but I can now tell that some of them are going to shape up very nicely. The oldest were hatched 3-26(6) and the cockerels still dont have all the cushion in, and the others were hathed 4-7(6) and 4-30(28), and they are still just now filling out decently, and the frizzles I have noticed are really starting to get width to their feathering. I have over 20 smooth cockerels, and plan to keep only 3, and I still want to wait on some of them that have caught my eye recently to fill out more. I dont want to get rid of a bird and find out later it was better than anything I dcided to keep.

I cull males harder and earlier than females because I only keep 1 male for every 3 females.

Bantam Cochins in Black, Birchen, Columbian and Buff Columbian. Now also have Sliver Penciled and Partridge. Working on a Silver Laced Project. Gold Laced project, and now a few White and White Frizzle.

Thank you for posting their pics! Seeing birds like yours make me love cochins even more - if that was possible.

My response yesterday was based on opinion and have since gathered number that pretty well back up my original post. I used the points list from Cochin International Master Breeders that had been earned before December of last year to gather the information. I will give the variety and the approximate number of people who have earned points. I only did Bantams. LF need more breeders in all varieties.

Black- over 110   people have earned points

White- about 80

Blue- over 60

Buff- about 40

Mottled-35

Splash-20

Black Frizzle-20

White Frizzle-16

Barred-15

Birchen-13

Brown Red-11

Columbian-11

Partridge-11

Blue Frizzle-8

Gold Laced-5

Silver Penciled-5

Red-4

Silver Laced-3

Lemon blue- ZERO

Black tailed Red- ZERO

Buff Columbian- ZERO

Your thoughts?

Wow! only 11 Partridge? I would like to work on them in a couple of years or so. I don't have room to work on them now but can't seem to part with the quad I have and they are not SQ. I know they require double breeding and I am only a novice but some day.........

 How about Dark Brahma?

I've never had any luck using the Chicken Calculator.  I understand Chicken Math, and I'm an accountant, so I can certainly use a Calculator, but put the two together and I'm totally lost.  Personally, I prefer book learning - it's easier for me to learn if I can read what's going on.

Thanks all for putting up with my inquisitiveness, you are all appreciated greatly!

Hope that helps a little bit!

Thank you, Coopa.

Your answers are very helpful and appreciated. The site you listed looks especially good-I cant wait to have some time to sit and read on it. I am planning to purchase Sigrid Van Dort's book because it has come highly recommended by a number of people and since I am truly a visual person I think the photos will be great(I know the cost is up there so I am budgeting for it). Does anyone here have any other suggestions on some good genetic sites or books that I can read? I am glad to know that I am not the only one that has problems with the chicken calculator.

Thanks again!

Then I think you just have to let them grow out as you describe leg color for Black Cochins.
