Who Is Your Stupidest Hen? - Page 3

This is Alijandro the BR. (Yes, you get a boys name for a hen when you let your kids pick the name!) She is so dumb that she will pick at her own feet while she is sitting on the perch and fall off.

And this is my Bella the Beautiful (but not very smart) blue cochin.  She couldn't figure out how to get in and out of the coop either.  And she is the LOWEST on the pecking order.   She follows Bitsy the Brahma around and it is a good thing because Bitsy has to protect her constantly.  And she screams bloody murder if you try to pick her up or touch her for any reason even though she was the cuddliest little chick.

This is going to make me sound bad, but my stupidest chicken was named Stupid. He came from the auction with 5 other day old barred rocks. He appear DOA when he arrived here.

I did the whole rescue thing with him and about 4 hours later he was up and peeping away, much to my surprise.

He never was right though. As he grow, he was just a mean rooster. He would try to attack me, but instead of spurring me. He would grab the bottom of my pant leg with his beak and start flogging me with his wings as I dragged him about trying to doing chores.

If I tried to pick him up, he acted scared and fell over on his side and spin around like he was trying to break dance.

He was the one that would always come running if they were out in the pen, and he would stand and look up at me with that "no ones home" look in his eyes. He has been the only chicken that I have owned that would totally tip his head upward and sideways at the same time to look at a human's face. (now who's stupid.?..oops hen only thread...backs out of room and runs as there isn't a delete anymore.)

Here's Hershey.  She's as sharp as a marble.  She's very pretty though.  It kills me to watch her bang into the fence trying to get to the food, when everyone else has run through the open door.  Also we have a low retaining wall in our yard that the girls fly up on.  About half of the time Hershey misjudges the height and smacks right into it, fluffs her feathers and looks around like, "now where did everyone go?"

Here's her sister Kirby.

Kirby got the brains, Hershey got the looks.

Our stupidest hen was one we had as kids, back in 1989. Puffin was my brother's pet hen. We got her as a pet because she was too stupid to follow the mama hen with all the other little chicks.

When she was grown, she knew where to get food and water, but she never figured out that egg-laying thing. She would fly up to tree branches, 7-8 feet off the ground, and lay her eggs...splat! We used to hear her making a fuss and try to run oustide in time to catch the egg as it fell.

Never met another chicken quite as dumb as she was. She was a black mutt, probably part Austrolorp.

My silkie hen Lyla is a total blond( no offence to anyone), first of all she will sit on a rock for three months and forget to come out and eat and drink, so I have to take her out of the coop for little excursions. One day I decided to move their waterer kind of a strange spur of the moment thing. Well, that afternoon when it came time to bring Lyla out she FREAKED!! Apparently she was having issues finding the waterer, at first I thought maybe her crest was getting in the way, but I had just given her a "haircut".  So, I went and picked her up and took her to the water, I think that was probably the happiest moment of her life!!!
ANOTHER Blond moment{sigh}.....tongue

Well I let little Dash and Lily out in the kitchen this evening to get a lil exercise.
I picked Dash up and PUT her in the kitchen, I left Lily to follow on her own.  Lily started peeping, and Dash ran and looked down the stairs to the basement to see if Lily was down there.  She was JUST around the cabinet corner for pity sake!  She cant even HEAR properly!!!!   he
(My other chickens could tell where I or the others were by HEARING)
WHY she thought anyone could be in the basement is beyond me, they have never in their life been down there and I dont normally even let them get near the stairs.   hu  I guess its appears scary and since she couldnt figure out Lily was only 10 feet away around the corner, she must be down in the SCARY place???

Oh I also had a chicken that looked at my face, its pretty unusual I think tho for them to recognize, she was my darling dummy that gave herself concussions on a regular basis.  Maybe its something about a concussion?    lau

Well, our most loved, but humanized slower hen is Rootbeer.  She is our Golden Crested Polish.  My son kept saying "look mom, her crest is squooshy".  She was 2 days old.  I just wanted to poke the top of his head.  Poor thing was never "right".

She follows you around like a dog, helps you herd everyone in the coop when it's getting dark, and then can't figure out why you're putting her in their with "them".  You walk outside she comes a running.  You walk back into the house, you have to watch how you let the screen door shut.  She'll follow you right into the family room.  The poor thing even followed me into the shower one night.  She was inside because once again she was pecked bloody, and we brought her in to get some Blu Kote on.

She gives a new twist to the the phrase "chicken chasing".  She will play freeze tag with the kittens.  They chase her then she freezes.  That's their cue.  Then she chases them until they freeze.  Back and forth, these 3 will do this non-stop.  One night she flew up on top of the entertainment center, and tried to talk "turkey" to the turkey.  My hubby's two brothers are taxidermists.  One day my girls had her in the house and hollared for me to come here.  I found her on one of the girls beds attempting to pull the covers up with her beak.  It's crazy to watch her do all these things, yet she is so incredibly simple.  She's the greatest though, and everyone that comes by our house all want to see her.  I think she knows it too.
