Jersey Giant Chickens

That's the post I was talking about! I was too short of time to search for it then, thanks for linking to it!

I was just wondering after typing that what I would cross a Buff Orp to if I had the time. I got fantastic fertility from my ISA browns when I bred them for fun a few times, and they are faster maturing, so I have to wonder on that. Better layers for sure, so if I put a dozen of them in with a buff Orp roo for a bit then collected eggs for 10 days I could easy have a Sportsman full..... Things that make me think!

I have a hundred ISA chicks showing up in December to winter raise so I have ready to lays to sell about the may long weekend when everyone is thinking spring. I'm going to keep about 40 so Maybe I need to track down a Buff Orp roo or 2.
 
Jersey Black Giants don't fully flesh out until 1.5-2 years old, though you might get a decent carcass before that.
 
The general opinion is that they don't make good meat birds because all their growth goes into bone rather than muscle for the first portion of their lives. Historically this was fine and they were used for making capons, and whacking great ones at that.

But now we have the Cornish Cross strains for meat birds, which no purebreed can come close to in quality or growth rate.
I am getting ready to caponize white giants, white rocks, and white orpingtons. I have all three coming in 3 weeks along with Red Rangers. I am going to be interested in how they compare growing out. Perhaps a capon for the table by Christmas
 
I have heard of Jersey Giants getting upwards of twenty pounds when caponized. Congrats on reviving a lost art!

Oh my goodness!!! What does one do with a 20 pound chicken??? This will definitely be an experience and will undoubtedly require multiple photos. White Rocks and White Orpingtons will look like runts next to one that size.
