thinking about bamboo

We have bamboo and can't get rid of it. The roots do travel forever. Ahhh!!!! If anyone knows of a way let me know. My eight year old has the job of pulling up bamboo and putting it in the fire pit. It keeps him busy for hours.

If anyone wants some I am more than willing to share.

Acutally not all bamboo is invasive. If planted right one can control those that are by putting barriers uder ground that stop the roots from spreading. There is alot of info out there on that also. Bamboo makes a great screen and does have so many uses.

Fargesia is a clump forming bamboo that might have a cultivar hardy in NY.

This site might have helpful info

I
have some fargesia fern leaf - but I am in zone 7b --- but I think if you look for the term "clump forming" you could find a bamboo that would work for you!

Have you thought about ornamental grasses? They will stay up and look neat all winter -- they aren't green when it is cold, but you will have privacy until you chop them down in the Spring... and wow do they look great in the summer!!!

AHappychick,
There are varieties that form clumps rather than run. (Much less invasive) I really like my bamboo, I have 2 varieties a mid size Golden Bamboo and a dwarf varigated variety, both are runners. I keep it trapped between the deck and lawn. It mostly won't grow under the deck and anything that grows out into the lawn gets mowed down. I've had it for 9 years now and other than some light maintenence haven't had much problem with it. BUT! the golden is making a big move into the lawn this year. I see some work ahead. I've attached a link to a local bamboo nursery. I visit at least once a year just to walk through their timber bamboo forest. Gosh I would love to plant timber bamboo. Lots of good info.

Imp-I need to cut back the short varigated variety. It is a shade lover. If you would like a start PM me an address and I'll get some in the mail soon. we'll see how it likes to travel. It won't work as a privacy hedge though. Only gets about 2 ft tall.

Hey there! We have 2 different types of bamboo here on my property that we planted last year. 1 area of bamboo that we have going we did actually dig up over by a ditch and brought back to our 5 acres by the barn and planted it and it did very well. And the other bamboo we have got hit by the freezes pretty bad last winter and is still working on comming back. Slowly coming back, but I think it will get there. I really hope my bamboo starts taking over like people say!

I have used corn for that(added privacy) in the past to facilitate our existing "shroud of trees and bushes" here. It's success is "seasonal",but we don't spend much time outdoors outside of Spring and Summer anyway.Just- maybe we should go for what we know- if bamboo isn't the right answer for us,my like minded friend. I also value privacy, and you can't put a price on peace of mind. I got the idea when 2 and 3 feet stalks would pop up ijn my back yard between mowing (I'm a procrastinator),just from the squirrels dropping a few kernels in transit. It was quite good corn (suggest choose a type "good" for eating unless it would be used for chicken feed). If a guy has chickens he might as well grow some corn too,I guess.
