Basically, most chickens are in tight quarters in battery cages with no rooster. If the box says fertile, the odds are pretty good you will get some development if they are new enough. If it says free range, depending on the source, there is a possibility it could work.

Fascinating! I got all of my Araucana/Americana/Easter Eggers from
the local feed store selling eggs. $2.50/doz. Got about a 75% hatch and just some beautiful Chickens that came from large blue eggs.

If you have a feed store nearby selling eggs, they will most likely be
fertile, so just pick the eggs you like and incubate them. I now get
beige, tan, blue and green eggs from them which looks nice with
the Marans I already had. My customers like the variety. Makes for an
interesting breakfast.

But he had a fabulous time talking to the judges and all the different folks that stopped by to look and were impressed with the original research. He is already talking about what he wants to do for his next project. I am thrilled he is excited about science all because of these chickens.
