Are muscovies good pets?

I don't think poultry make good pets at all. If you want a pet, get a dog or a guinea pig. Poultry are for eggs and meat. That said, I am very fond of my ducks.

Our Muscovies live in a barn and have a largish run surrounded by electonet.

It is good to see the opinions of others.

No one has the last word, it is good to recall, though we can all have a valid 'first word'.

There is no set definition of what makes a creature a 'pet'. Again, there are many opinions as to what that may be. Even the dictionary will not offer the final word.

It all depends upon what one expects from the creature he is keeping.

Some people keep pet goldfish, pet mice, pet frogs, turtles, and crickets. Some of us, who conceive of the word 'pet' as only that which has fur, can be cuddled, pet, kissed, and who comes when you call--would say that it is impossible to keep the above as pets. They can never be pets. Even pet parakeets are often not always the most cuddly creatures.

But the fact remains, people do keep ducks and geese and cockatoos--all birds--as pets; and with much satisfaction. But maybe the term 'pet' has a broader meaning than what I think it means. In that case, keeping pigeons, cockatoos, and turtles as 'pets' becomes, perhaps, not so reprehensible a prospect..........

Also, the phrase, 'ducks should be raised as ducks, not as dogs' remains highly obscure as to its meaning.

The use of all such as 'no nos' may be counterproductive and confusing.

It is good that all can express opinions about these things.

I see the humor in your post. When we see people with pet ducks, we can't help but size up the duck for its potential to produce offspring bound for market.

Our ducks have no names.

I have 2 muscovies as well as 2 mix breed ducks, a african grey goose, turkeys, and chickens. All my birds free range but roost in a small pen at night. My muscovies do not like to be picked up but do not mind being handled, also they get along quite well with all the birds even 3 week old turkeys. the two muscovies like to stay close to my goose, very friendly. One is a drake and the other is female, the female likes to boss the drake around. They love eating the cucombers that grow around their pen and suprisingly are cleaner then my other ducks. I raised all the birds together from hatchlings which helps them except each other and i also sit with my birds in the morning and right before they go back into the pen to roost. I have never seen any sign of aggresion from the birds, they all tend to follow me around the yard. They are constantly around people and young children as young as one years old. They do not attack any humans and do not show signs of agression to the other birds but of course they have a big yard for personal space. I have been raising multiple species of birds for four years now, i raise them as pets, lawn mowers, bug controllers, and egg layers. My birds also get along well with my dog and they even eat and sleep together at times. The birds also like to lay their eggs in the dogs dog house. My experience with ducks, it is best to get them as young as possible and handle them as often as you can. Also they love playing in a sprinkler

I have had scovies a few years and never had one be aggressive toward people and yes, mine are pets and are treated as such, they get bread, mainly heels or old bread ...I love watching mine talk and go about their business

Personally Muscovy Ducks are the best pets. I have raised two other types of ducks and by far Muscovy Ducks are the best!!!! They started following me in the backyard. They run up to meet me everyday and LOVE eating my hair!!!:) Hope this helped, but honestly I think it depends on the duck and where you got it from. If your looking for a pet be sure to hold them everyday so they get used to you and you'll get a wagging happy tail everyday when they run up to see you.

I have a Muscovy and a pekin duck- both females but mine are house ducks, honestly they are the best pets I've ever owned they've been doused in love by me and my son (age 4) -and they're not aggressive at all or anything aside from sweethearts. My Muscovy doesn't like being handled but she loves if you sit with her and talk to her and pat her where as my pekin is the absolute opposite she will jump into your lap for cuddles and follows my son EVERYWHERE. We are currently registering her as a service animal so she can go more places with him. My pekin duck is loud though when she's unhappy she will let the entire district know with a quack that goes right through you! I'd recommend pekin for their beautiful natures and wide variety of colours you can get them in but I'd also say stick with the female muscovies for their quietness and because they make incredible pets who wag their tails everytime they see you if you spend lots of time with them and be kind! Every living creature knows kindness and will reward you with kindness in return. Please don't hit kick or smack your ducks it enforces more bad behaviour from them. If my pekin is naughty which she often can be (just her personality) I simply pick her up and loudly say NO and put her either outside or in her room so she knows that that behaviour only gets her separated from her loved ones. Being nasty back only makes them afraid of you and you're not keeping prisoners so they shouldn't be treated like it.

Muscovies can be naughty as can all living creatures! If You need to discipline one or have one that is hard to deal with I'd recommend to be persistent in the loving apparatchik and showing kindness it will Change them right around.

If you must discipline then simply shoo them away if in a pen and repeatedly show you're the Aldo by saying in a fir and loud voice- NO. You can pick them up if they're being excessively naughty and try the time out tip too. Ducks are flock animals and don't like being separated from each other.
