We're working hard to get the City of Glendale, Arizona to judge that chickens are legal in R1 zoned areas.

We need your support. We've have a small packet of info that we can send you that will talk about how you can help.

Together we can make this happen!

Thanks for your support,
Chris and Deanna

Received this email yesterday evening. Finally some movement:

Okay Glendale residents, here is the first meeting. We just received from city of Glendale. It is a non speaking meeting, but bodies show support too:

In regards to allowing chickens as pets in residential neighborhoods, the City Council will receive a presentation and recommendation from city staff on December 15 here at City Hall. The workshop will begin at 1:30 in Council Chambers - Room B3. At this time we do not know the order of the agenda items. Sometimes these meetings can run very long so I will do my best to notify you when I know where this item is placed on the agenda. Please reach out to our office if you do not hear from me by Friday, December 11. Workshops are information only meetings that inform the City Council of needed information. For the December 15 meeting, the Council will not vote to approve or reject a new policy that allows chickens as residential pets, but it will give you an opportunity to hear from members of the City Council who choose to ask questions and share their input.

Best regards,

Council Assistant, Barrel & Cholla District
Glendale City Council

UPDATE**
Item of Special Interest {Backyard Chickens} Council Workshop – Postponed to January 19, 2016 Glendale, AZ
I spoke with Ryan Lee {assistant to Bart Turner} today. He advised that the workshop scheduled for December 15th to discuss backyard chicken keeping has been postponed until Tuesday, January 19, 2016. See below e-mail from Ryan:

Hi Shelly,

Staff is currently researching and preparing a report to the City Council regarding allowing chickens as pets in residential neighborhoods. We were informed last week that the report will be shared with the Council on January 19, not December 15. We apologize for the delay and look forward to seeing you at the Council Workshop on January 19.

Best regards,

Ryan Lee

If you haven’t had a chance to contact your council member you still have over a month to do so, this also means that we have the extra time frame to reach out to more city of Glendale residents.

Please spread the word about the meeting change, I know there were a few individuals including us that were planning on the meeting this month.

We did it!!

City of Glendale council has instructed staff to create an ordinance to allow backyard chicken keeping.

In our excitement and being on cloud 9 we should mention that the ordinance still has to be written, there is still a process that the city is required to go through to change the ordinance and the city will determine certain restrictions that will apply, such as number of hens allowed, noise, nuisance etc...

This also does not change any HOA restrictions that may be in place regarding backyard chickens.

HOWEVER it is a huge step in making backyard chickens legal in the city of Glendale, and have no doubt they will be legal.

Just don't count all your chickens before they hatch, but feel free to do the chicken dance!

Any update as of yet? someone i met recently said because of the new zoning for chickens in glendale she can now have up to 5 in her area. im in Zone 8 if that helps. been trying to find any info on the new zoning but have not been able to as of yet.

Nothing is official on number of chickens allowed or when until staff creates a new ordinance. Council is allowing staff up to 60 days from Jan 19 to create a new ordinance.

So I'm confused because my address is glendale but technically I'm in Phoenix. My area code is 85308 but my street signs are phx my garbage/mail/bulk pickup/police is all Phoenix so what am I supposed to go by? And are the chickens now legal to own in my area code? How do I know what zone I am?

Does anyone know the latest update on SB1140? All I can find is that there was a second read on 01/20/16 and then sent to committee. So excited this went to the state level, now I don't have to worry about getting caught and having to get rid of my girls or whether I can take my girls with me if I move to another AZ city.

If your mailing address said you are in which city then you are in that city. You could clarify it with your post office or property tax document . They should have the correct city. I know areas will change zip code but not city before.

This is like the people who live in Ahwatukee as well.

I met some who keep calling it Phoenix for some reason.

You should check Glendale code compliance department. I think it's still illegal.. I was legal then they banned it and now reconsidering.. ? check to be sure
