That's what I love about this website. My lovely rooster was doing the same thing, so I popped in here to see if I could find out why. Thanks for providing the video. I feel much better - although ours have tons of grit available - maybe just a piece of stuck lettuce.

Gapeworm does not live in the crop but in the trachea (windpipe.) It can also cause this sort of symptom, though I would think they would all have it if one does.

The rest of the flock is fine and this morning I discovered one of the year old hens acting like she wanted to crow. I watched her for a bit longer and though perhaps that was not the case. Yesterday she was eating and drinking just fine; her comb and wattle are a healthy color and other than molting, she is in good condition.

I have had others tell me that when a young rooster is trying to crow it sounds like someone gasping for breath. Yes, I looked down her throat and see no worms... Any ideas? I live in a very rural area; the local vet does not treat chickens.
