Have you ever been pecked in the eye?

My 7 week old chick has just started this! She's a barred Plymouth Rock and so far the only one who has attempted the eye peck, lol! She likes to get up on my shoulders and she went right for my eyeball last night. Gratefully it wasnt too hard and now I keep my eye closed closest to the shoulder that she's on!

Might be easier to just get safety glasses or not let her on your shoulder anymore lol

Lol! Yeah, this is just recent that she even likes to be on my shoulders. I have started to take her off since the peck but in the few seconds she's on one, my eye is closed, lol!

Yeah, mine started taking to shoulders around that age too actually. I think they're just getting older and bolder lol

Surprised how many don't get it checked out. An infection in the eye can lead to blindness so think I'd be having it looked at. My daughter recently managed to get some glue stuck to her eye (don't ask lol) and I took her to the optometrist rather than a dr. They had all the equipment to really check it out for damage, they put a dye in the eye and then checked under magnification and even just from having that removed they gave her antibiotic drops for a week as a precaution because she said infections can be so nasty. If anyone does get pecked maybe if you don't want to do the dr thing just head to your local optometrist instead.

I can't speak for others, but I have had enough sawdust scratches in my eyes (WHILE wearing safety glasses and checked out by dr's) that I know when it's med-worthy and when it's not. usually, a puncture or a scratch hurts like the dickens and feels like there's something in there. that's when it's med worthy for me. The small peck I sustained didn't even scratch my eye. I rinsed it just in case of any bacteria but there's no pain at all. if there were pain, I would get it checked out. I REALLY like my eyes, they are SUPER useful lol!

I wouldn't allow her to perch on shoulders - alphas want to be the highest ones. She will peck you out of curiosity and also to show you are lessor than her. Wear wrap around safety googles, and push her off or down when she tries to perch above.

Cage birds like parrots, cockatiels etc are the same. When my sister got her cockatiel they told her not to let the bird perch on shoulder or her head. Of course she didn't listen. Bye bye birdy.
