Best type of chicken for kids to raise...

I would say Buff orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds but all my chickens are friendly.

The first chickens I started out with are Silkies. They adore being held and children love their soft fur. They are extremely docile and never fighty and on top of that, they lay small eggs that are perfect sized for small children. So i'd say Silkies.

"they're the lap kitty of the chicken world"

Look at what hatchery's have available. I think "chickens for backyards" gives a good descirption of breed traits. From there pick what you like. It really doesn't matter because you are going to start with a few and soon after will be adding more (whether you have room or not). Call it "addiction" or "failing chicken math" it's inevitable. . . Sorry, but someone had to tell you. Enjoy your birds (that's inevitable as well)

my vote goes to BUFF ORPINGTON !!!!! i have two

they dont fly ( they flapp wings but dontgo higher than a foot or two )

there very hardy with temperature so can deal withthe hot and cold
are large solittle hands grabbing out for a cuddle is notto damaging for them
they love to follow anyone expecially if food is involved!
the neighbours kids and the family love tocomeover to see themand feed them a treat !

good luck on your choice

I say Silkies. For me silkies are very nice birds and very friendly. Our silkie Rooster is a big baby if I come out and sit down hops in my lap and goes to sleep, but does THE best job of taking care of the girls If not i would go with Australorps Or EEs they lay blue and green eggs and We have 1 EE that like to be held like a baby and she is full grown it is a funny site!

According to the JULY 7, 2014 issue of Capper's Farmer (Practical Homesteading Magazine) that I received in the mail last week (I know it is May right now, but it IS the JULY issue I received) In the article on pages 18 - 19 called PICKIN' CHICKENS, the breed of chickens known as CINNAMON QUEENS are great egg layers and have an exceptionally docile personality. I am planning to have a few backyard chickens at my city home, and these are going to be MY choice because I know my grandchildren will be able to handle them without me having to worry about them getting scratched. This issue of Capper's is really very good. Perhaps your local library has a copy of this issue or can get it for you (even if it is from another library) Good luck on your venture :)

New Hampshire males crossed with Silver Laced Wyandottes gives the Cinnamon Queen.... They might be fairly docile at that.

Docility is kind of a bird by bird thing, in my experience.
