Do You Take Newborn Chicks Away From A Broody Hen??

I would keep my eye on the situation, and not even separate her and the chicks from the rest of the flock. Obviously, if she abandons them in favor of sleeping in the tree, you'll have to intervene. But, the best way to integrate chicks is to do it right from the start. If Mama is a good Mama, she will kick the tar out of any one who messes with her babies. It might be a good idea to offer them some starter for a few weeks until they are big enough to eat the whole grains.

Hi, to prevent baby chicks from eating adult bird feed then hang the feeder high enough so the baby chicks can not reach and then set the chick feed on the floor.

Advise please. I started 13 silkies eggs(mailed order) in an incubator and gave 2 of them to a friend to place under her broody girl. All of the ones in incubator did not hatch. Last night one of the two under the broody girl hatched. twins! unfortunately only one is alive. will she dispose of the other one herself or should i remove it? she is still sitting on the chics and the other unhatched egg. fyi-this is her first hatch as well.

@Chicken0bss3sed , I thought about hanging the layer feed higher, but worried that the chicks would still get anything that the hens dropped on the ground.

I know that its not good for them to eat layer food. What type of feed do you give your hens?

My first chick hatched yesterday, there are 3 more today, and I spotted an egg with a pip this afternoon.

Any advice would be great!

Update: My BO has been setting on purchased eggs, the BO eggs went in on a Friday and the Bielefelders went in on Sunday! So far, we have 4 BO chicks and the Beilefelders should be hatching today. I had 2 inside in an incubator and they pipped this morning!

Once all the eggs are hatched I plan to move them into a different space in the coop and see about integrating them. I have 7 hens including the broody. Fingers crossed for successful Bielefelder hatch.

Don't take away the chicks. The mom will raise them. If you take them, she becomes upset because she wants to raise them. Put both the mom and chicks on starter, then later on grower, and when the chicks begin to lay, on layer. You can seperate her and her chicks so that they don't get pecked or eaten. You do have to provide food and water but she will care for them herself, like showing them how to scratch, run from predators, eat, drink, and dustbathe. It is fun and very cute to watch a hen care for her chicks.
