I've read many posts on here where people mention a pullet's comb and wattles getting redder and bigger and it is a symptom of them about to lay.

Well, with my 2 RIR pullets that are not laying yet (but hoping....any day now...lol), I've noticed at times the comb and wattles looking redder looking and I'll get my hopes up, but then nothing. Then, either later in the day or the next day, the comb and wattles will look more pale..not as red as it was before....???

This morning, I noticed one of my pullets comb and wattles really looking red compared to the other one. Then, this afternoon both of theirs looked red.

What gives? Do they change shades like that or what?

Does anyone have a comparison pic of one of their pullets that is about to lay and then the same pullet when they're not about to lay so I can compare?

I'm curious too. I've noticed the daily color change in my 13 week RIR too.

I have noticed 2 different pullets' combs and the area around their eyes turn bright red and fade back to light within minutes. I think it is when they are excited or upset for some reason...in this case me trying to round them up. The first time it happened to a cochin and I was convinced it was "turning roo"on me. But weeks have passed and she is still a she...Then just yesterday, my pale Maran was bright red. Later, she calmed down and went back to normal...Weird!

We have a 5-6 month old Splash Orpington Roo,and he's bright red,,,,all the time,,,,I think it's the testosterone building up in him,,,,,,,(got long eyebrows too) I / we never see any change in the girls combs or what little wattles they have. They're 14--16 weeks.

My 8 b/o pullets have color changes in their combs and wattles all the time. I also believe it's due to excitement and however they are feeling at any given moment.

OK, so you can't really base if they're about to lay on combs and wattles since the color in them can change based on their mood...whether they're scared, excited, etc.?
