Hi, Donna, and welcome-byc

Your question is buried here in this thread, you'd be better off starting your own thread in Managing your Flock but I will answer you here, too - you don't have to take the rooster out.  If you want to raise chicks under a broody there are many people here who can guide you.  I hope you enjoy your visits here to BYC!

-Ann, a gardening beek who now has chickens:  3 BRs, 2 BOs , 3 GLWs, 3 RIRs, 3 EEs and a Bantam EE Roo who doesn't know he's small!

Come visit The Easy Garden for answers to your gardening questions - big or small.  We dig dirt!

Leave him in with the girls, eggs are just as edible whether you have a roo or not.  So if he is doing no harm let him be, you wont have chicks unless you incubate or let a hen sit.
