Do chickens drink at night?

water I mean, do birds just sleep at night or do they eat and drink too. I have a smallish coop and I don't have any water or food in there for them, every thing is out in the run. They seem fine but I was just curious. Thanks, Laura

I have a light on in my coops 24/7 and in the morning I have to top off the feeders in them.  My watering system is automatic so I can't say about the water, but I am betting they drink also.  Now that it is getting cold I think you should put some food and water in your coop.

Ducks are active at night and eat and drink, but chickens without artificial light sleep all night.  Personally I wouldn't keep a light on them 24/7.....They need to roost in the dark as part of their natural cycle.  Even giant egg farms let their hens have a few hours of dark every night.

Mine are closed in the "A" part of my coop, the top part, at night and I always have a waterer and a small food dish up there and both need a good bit of refilling in the mornings.  I drop the door down in the mornings and they go down into their pen where I have a bigger waterer and food bowl.  I also have a 15 watt bulb in the "A" part of their coop that stays on all the time, they like being able to see to get their food, water or a different spot on the roosts.  smile

Mine eat and drink at night in a pitch black coop.

I also have a small coop and their food andwater is available in there 24/7.  I was thinking of taking their water out for the winter in case they spilled it or something.  In the summer it would dry, but in the winter I'm afraid their shavings would just rot and freeze.

I do think they eat/drink in there, but I think it might be because I don't let them out at the crack of dawn.  They usually spend at hour or two past daybreak in their coop (especially in the summer) in the morning, because I usually don't get to them until 7:30 during the week and 8:30 or so on the weekends.
