Ideal

Thread Starter

edit to add:  Working with Ideal now and I am very impressed with customer service!  I am hoping to find an answer for them and I hope we can figure out what is going wrong.  The birds we received are beautiful, that is one reason I am so sad we are losing them!

I briefly read the Ideal thread in this section because we are having trouble with an undiagnosed disease in only the chicks we got from Ideal this year.  What we have hatched/bought from local breeders have been unaffected.

I guess my questions are:

This disease takes the chicks so quickly I can't get them for a necropsy before they die (and they will only perform a necropsy on a bird that they euthanize on the spot)  How can I find out what it is?  We have been told E Coli, cocci, or a virus.

Should I contact Ideal?  Should they know about this?

I am saddened by the loss of these pets and frustrated at the loss of a large monetary investment.  I am to the point that I don't even want to buy from a hatchery anymore & I am not sure that is the right way to feel either.

I'd contact Ideal..they'll be nice and send you more birds most likely.  AND i would also bring the bird in to be tested. because another poster just had 15 out of 29 birds die from Ideal also. So your not the only one. sad

It can happen anywhere! But let them make it right~ I mean you can get it from a wild bird dropping into your yard.
Get the test done on one of the birds to see what the final decision is on "cause"
Then call IDEAL.

Take all of the chicks (even healthy appearing ones) when you go to have a necropsy done.  Surely one of them will live long enough to be euthanized for the procedure.

What are the symptoms?  If it was cocci that can be confirmed with a fecal exam.

No, neither would e. coli.  If it was a virus, it could have been contracted during the shipping process.

Almost ALL of my birds are from Ideal stock and I have never had any problems like what is being described. I have had chick losses but most of mine were overcrowding or dog problems. I would contact Ideal and
1. let them know your having problems
2. Ask if anyone else has reported problems
If so they might have already figured it out and be able to offer you advice/solutions
Who knows they might even offer replacements, if they are aware the problem started at the hatchery it is more likely they will take the responsibility and reimburse you one way or another.
