Tennessee

Hey yall, trying to get a grip on potentially selling eggs here in TN. I've read different things on various threads but I'm thinking I'm seeing contradictions because the info is old...

What are the rules currently on prepping eggs for sale? Do I have to sanitize and buy brand new cartons? Just trying to get my ducks in a row so to speak. Appreciate any links or advice!

She's one of my best layers and I'm running out of fridge space!! Please help lol
lol! This is the best problem to have, am I right? Well, first off, your eggs need to be washed, especially if they have any dirt or poo on them, before sale. No soap, just water. Your egg cartons must say “wash before consuming” and “refrigerate”. They must also have something on them where your clients can contact you on the egg carton.
Anything else is up to you! I like to have free ranged, and handpicked on there as well. IF you can get the cartons back from the people you sold to you can use them again. We do a “one dollar off if you give back the carton”.

Those are the minimums, but here’s a few tips from a fellow egg seller-
Sell your eggs in more city areas! You can sell over state lines as well, as long as you are only selling them for eating, and have a point of contact with the buyer. But a lot of people in rural TN have chickens, so there will be more buyers in the city, as well as they will pay more for fresh eggs, normally.

I live in southern Tennessee, and around here, we can just barely sell a few dozen for 2 dollars each. We go to Nashville and Huntsville (Alabama) and sell about ten dozen each time for 4 dollars!
Best of selling! 😜

Thank you so much! I think I'm still struggling with what is current law vs. best practice in 2024, though...

For instance, here's a link describing the Rutherford County Farmers Market requirements for egg sales in 2024, (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...gQFnoECBoQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2ikiYZGYq-RshmSkAB48vt) which says:

"Fresh poultry eggs may be sold at the RCFM without a TDA permit; however, all egg vendors must abide by
the best management practices described at https://foodscience.tennessee.edu/wp-content/uploads/
sites/52/2020/03/A-Guide-for-Farm-to-Consumer-Egg-Sales-in-Tennessee.pdf. Eggs must be sold in new
containers and labeled with producer contact information." *(Hilariously the foodscience link is dead/inaccessible to me, so not much help confirming what those best management practices are... Also this is the Farmer's Market just insisting these best practices must be followed in order to sell there, not that the best practices ARE law and must be followed everywhere in TN)

Then, here's a 2021 dated document describing a repeal of the Egg Law in 2020 and describes best practices, vs. mandatory procedure, for everything but the labeling part of packaging eggs for flocks under 3000 (unless I've horribly misread this, in which case I'd love to be set straight): https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...MQFnoECA4QBg&usg=AOvVaw0-vlGbAVDGrxulFVSjALAN

Do I just have outdated or poorly worded sources here? Trying to get something in writing so we know we're completely legal before we make any sales. Really appreciate y'all's guidance!

Edit: Here, I think, is where I read the pre-2020 lawbinding requirements. Look at the age of all the sources on the last page: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...IQFnoECCAQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3qLbhc8-W9gn7aqxVTccWf

I think this last bit is where my confusion is coming from. Still law? Or are these now just the current "best practices"?

It’s still mandatory. The laws are down to where you can’t go to jail for not following them, but to where there is a fine for it. If I were you, I would do what the “outdated” one says, to be safe. Everything I said in my earlier post is what i do, and what I know is law. Unfortunately I don’t have any links for you. The research I did was years ago on a different phone. I hope you can find one though, and found this useful!

Hello y'all, anybody have Exchequer Leghorn hatching eggs near northeast tn? I'm willing to drive 2 hours. I really would prefer to drive as opposed to receiving eggs damaged by postal workers no matter how well the seller packs em the post can damage them. Exchequer Leghorn eggs anyone? ☺

Hello! I am a little new to this thread, but I do have some available chickens and eggs if anyone is interested!
I have silkie eggs, barnyard mix eggs, and Black Diamond eggs,
I have a miniature rooster, he is one fourth Americana and three fourths silkie. He is a very good rooster, not fond of other roosters but is very nice to hens and is not rude to them. He is a good protector and finds nice treats for them all the time. For some reason he loves Rhode Island reds, and New Hampshire reds…. Rlly any red or brown chicken, lol, but is nice to all of them. He has been handled since hatching, and does not particularly love being picked up, but never shows spurs, chasing, or shows any sign of being aggressive. We love him we just don’t have a spot for him.
If you want to rename him that’s fine but we named him Strawberry Shortcake, lol, and call him Shorty, bc he is so small.
To give yall the freshest eggs and the most fertile ones, pls let me know a week ahead of time. Thanks again!

EDIT: I live in southern Tennessee, bout an hour south from Nashville.
Can you pm me pics of your stock on the silkies please

Hey yall! I'm on the hunt for local blue hatching eggs...

Posted 4/11/24:

Not interested in shipped, but can drive around the Gallatin / Hendersonville / Goodlettsville area for pickup. Got an unexpected broody so it will need to be within a few days.

Not concerned about breed, just looking for the blue egg genetics. Big plus if your rooster is also an Easter Egger or from a blue egg laying breed.

Feel free to reply here or just PM me your rates and photos of your chickens. Thank you!
