How to get diesel smell out of clothing?

My DH was working on the tractors yesterday and managed to get soaked in diesel.
I've tried washing his clothes and the towels he used to clean up in more detergent than normal, oxy-clean, vinegar, baking soda and they still smell!  Washed three times.
I thought about trying Murphy's Oil Soap since that's what I used to use to get the red clay stains out of the kid's ball uniforms and engine grease off the ex's work shirts, but I'm leary of mixing chemicals, i.e., diesel and oil soap.  Silly I know.  hmm
How do I get the smell out?

Try soaking the clothes in a tub of warm water or washer after agitating a few minutes with 1 cup of TIDE or degreaser like Dawn dish soap for 2 hours(this breaks down oils in fuel) drain this water off then rinse then refill tub or washer with warm clean water and a 2 liter bottle of Coke and a whole box of baking soda agitate it around to mix it up with the clothes . Let this soak for 12-24 hours. Wash like normal. There is not even a faint fuel smell left. This could get expensive if you do this each load for some one who works and gets full of fuel/gas all the time though.

I'll have to get hubby to pick up some more baking soda on his way home from work.  Between trying to wash out the diesel smell yesterday and the kitty litter box every day I feel like I should buy stock in Arm & Hammer.
Can't do the Tide (I'm allergic), but Dawn I have.
Thanks aerosmith_99 & welcome to BYC!  smile
monarc23, it reeks doesn't it?  Very few smells bother me worse than diesel.  Except that dang litter box.

My wife says Arm and Hammer detergent works good for that. And dont put them in the dryer till you get rid of the smell.

I would have said leave them in the laundry room, and next time I put them on they are clean.   Or turn them in at work and let the uniform service clean them.  idunno

there is this stuff at walmart called superclean...its in the automotive section in a purple gallon jug...it is a super degreaser...use it to presoak for about an hour then wash...just dump the whole presoak right in the washer...after you use this you wont try anything else...it works great

My dear husband checks my head periodically to see if I'm growing combs or waddles!!!
I may have a few feathers growing behind my ears tho!!
