Yes it is. The guy I spoke to this morning said it wasn't but I live on Long Island so "chick days " at Agway is big. I no longer live upstate so I don't get to go to all the great things you guys have.I haven't been to the state fair since 1985. I am going to enjoy it just the same on Sunday.I'll take it where I can
Evening all. Having a rough day at work when my daughter calls me to ask if I knew that some of the terrorists had escaped the brooder box. I said no and told her to block the space they were sneaking out of. Come home and dh tells me that one of the red pullets has figured out (at 3 weeks old) that she can fly out of the small space between the edge of the box and the screen I put on top as a barrier. Sigh. I must now hunt down some chicken wire and turn their box into maximum security lockdown otherwise I will have a basement as a brooder box! I"m telling you, this group of youngsters are terrorists! I cant wait till they are juveniles. I guess we better hurry up and finish their new security building before we have to live in it!!! The tiny tots (aka silkies) are more laid back and quiet.
I do believe that Betty, my psychotic glw who killed her hatching eggs last year, is broody again. I reached in to check under her for eggs and she nailed me on the hand. She is on the short list for freezer camp, as in the first line. I dont think she is laying and after last years fiasco of almost to the end and then murder, I may make the call sooner rather than later. It will depend on how much she upsets the others, as I am now getting a nice flow of steady eggs from the girls.
Hoping we get the rain they are calling for in the forecast. Good luck to all who are hatching at present. I am setting eggs on suncday for the mothers day hatchalong. I hope my silkies prove themselves with this batch. Rancher--havent heard from you in a bit so I hope all is well with you.

Isn't it silly how some batches of chicks are into trouble more than others? We have some Am's, Barnevelders and some of our chicks are they are so mellow. The ducklings on the other hand , as soon as they hear us they start PEEPING loudly until we come over. Little buggers need their water filled 3x a day. Don't really want to give them a bigger waterer because with the amount they get out of the 2 stacked containers they would about flood the barn.
Everything around here is dusty. Might bring the shop vac or the leaf blower into the chicken barn to get rid of some of it. Any ideas as to which will work better? Problem is the ceilings are about 12 ft high and there is no way to reach up there....
Yum, chicken soup!

got home tonight and started doing shores and notcied that a broody that has been sitting on eggs for 26 days no longer was, I figured the eggs were no good. Then to my amazement, I see a chick pop it's head from under her chest. Awesome, now to make the Broody pen ready (She was in with the main flock) Light, food water, Moved the two of them, and she starts hard pecking the chick. the giant shicks to the little one with no issues in the brooder. Stupid hen is back on the nest with no eggs.

Update: The CL ad is Jonelle Pionessa. Anyone hear of her? Good? Bad?
Besides the Rocks, BA and Amaraucana (specified not EE), she has friends that have the Speckled Sussex, Dominiques and Welsummer I have been looking for!
She is going to email me pics of her actual birds, as the CL pics are general breed pics pulled online.
I've heard of her from a friend of mine, but never met her. She seems to pick up chicks from other breeders for reselling (not sure if that is the case just a theory). She is currently looking for BLRW and she's meeting up with another fellow BYCer on sunday in New Woodstock for some other breed.

I have been collecting eggs for the hatch along . Was there a thread for that?
Heh... When cats attack!!! (seriously, my cat is scared to death of chickens, even the little ones). My pullets (and one roo) are preparing for the time when they can get out and eat that cat!.. ;)
Hope everyone has a nice day! Rain hasn't gotten here yet, so I am hopefully going out on my daily 5 mile walk soon. I keep trying to run into a neighbor who is supposed to buy my chicks. I offered him a cheap price, but I expected him to get them before I had to feed them for weeks. He better get them soon or he's getting all roos. Muahahah. (kidding, but he's getting 1/2 and 1/2 if he makes me wait long enough to be able to sex them).
lol. My cats are indoor cats. But my moms ( they are my neighbors) 15 lb Maine Coon is afraid of 3 lb sumatra hens. He used to be interested in them until I had my 1st broody. She attacked him with all her ticked off broody furry. He has left all of the chickens alone since then

I'm always shocked how people take something typed on a forum so personally :) If I say it here I have done it. No Bull poop from me. I'm not arguing, I'm stating what I see in MY flock of 10 years.I'm NOT P.C. If that offends please just block me :)
