My hens are laying but fertility has been low. My cockerels are still young. With the weather, I recommend south. We haven't had snow accumulation, and it looks like we'll get to January before we get more than an inch of snow.

With supplemental light and steady diet I finally got all my layers to lay for me today. 7/7. Now that we've reached solstice (Happy Solstice!), I'm going to taper off the extra light and try to get to a more natural rhythm. Raising chickens has certainly helped me through the shortening days. They are funny little critters.
I'm creating Pleasant Row chickens: I'm starting with goals of cold hardy, dual purpose, and always bearded using Ameraucana, Crested Cream Legbar, Copper Marans, EE, Orpington, and Rock.
I'm also working toward improving the Cream Brabanter breed.

If you wait till spring you can put them outside when they have grown some ..

They dont have to be kept inside where it is warm

She was a character, the one who for at least one full summer hopped the fence to lay her egg next to my basement door.

Sorry for the loss.

Why do chickens cross the road?  To be road kill.  Stupid Delaware was hit yesterday, came home to her in the road last night.  We took the chicken fence down last week in preparation for winter (whenever it arrives).  Del was a bully to the younger hens and not laying, so no big loss for us.  Still stinks.

Ayam Cemanis: anyone on this thread interested in a small breeding group (4 hens & 1 roo)? In 2015 I bought 20 eggs, 16 of them hatched and these are the best 5 of those birds. Roo from different breeder than hens. TMA line from what I've been told. Nice birds, lots of potential. I'm throwing it on this thread bc I'd rather not ship them. Pm me if interested. Thx! 😀

Yes, and thanks! They're all great. No eggs yet though, slackers! They're just hitting six months though so hopefully soon.
