They've got straw, by the way - primarily under the roosts. Should we scatter it more? Maria really likes laying in the full bale, and they kicked it all out of the actual nest box.
Small city big town near me Oneonta just 'legalized' chickens for the first time. Many small rural towns near me still do not allow chickens, crazy, you can have them in NYC!!! I'm so glad I don't live by those rules, no restrictions here.
My girls also kick out their bedding in the nest boxes, I don't know why, I just keep replacing it. I've tried hay, straw, dry grass, tree leaves, wood chips, sawdust, WHY! They have four nest boxes and the dozen plus all lay in only two of them WHY? And lay the in two with just a ring around the edge cause they kick out the bedding, hard wood that they lay on. Good thing they have hard shells.
