NY chicken lover!!!! - Page 736

Not a lot to say on my end.  Except I had some eggs cracked yesterday. Not sure if it's thin shells or the cold. I didn't collect them til late.

I have posted to the SFH post though, cuz I noticed some of the chicks I got have crooked toes.  Not happy about that, since I hope to hatch eggs some day.  I seem to recall that this is a problem with them from the GF site, though I did not get them from GF.  I only got 8 so now that leaves I think 5 to work with.  I would like to buy more but can't afford it.  At least right now.

I did a search on Sweden last night looking for information and learned they had a problem with Newcastle disease over there with the poultry. However they import chicken too. They also had a situation with glass in the chicken and so have Germany and some others.

In other news I've applied for the job at Purely Poultry.  It would work out great for me and them since I'm retired and have plenty of time. With the exception of my volunteer job, but I can be free for their hours. Plus I have no kids to deal with and no distractions. I know this house was a God send because it had everything I need or wanted and more. Such as this fourth bedroom which is now an office.  big_smile.png

I have windows 7 on my computer and am accessing BYC through Firefox, if that means anything to anyone having trouble. You might want to make sure your windows is updated.  You can check for updates and if you haven't set your computer for "automatic" updates.

I also have Norton Antivirus and Spybot, both recommended by my son the computer tech.

Take care friends, stat warm.

Ok, tell me is it the "new" site or what is going on with everyone.  SLOW action on our little NY thread.  sad.png

Very Slow.  Maybe some people were lost in the changeover......

Rancher - Congratulations!  A job that is sure to be fun!  Lucky.  My job(s) are fun too.  School bus driver and Teachers Aide.  hu.gif When I got to work this morning it was 3* and the windshield on the bus was visited by Jack Frost over night.  Looked like he hung out ALL night the frost was so thick!

Gosh I hope people weren't lost.  Sad.  I am using Google Chrome, little slower I think but my pc is old as dirt.

I am in and out of the house 3-4 times a day so I try to collect as ofter as I can to avoid frozen eggs.  That really bugs me!  Waste.  Is there anything we can do with them after they have froze?  Are they safe to eat?

We are supposed to start getting more snow around 6 pm this evening.  Guess it's time.  I'm ready to start planting my garden.  Already got some seeds from Gurney's.  big_smile.png

they are absolutely safe to eat. Some people freeze eggs on purpose. Personally I save our frozen ones and when I get a dozen, I boil them and make egg salad. Eggs can be frozen for up to 6 months, then thawed to use.

I'm always shocked how people take something typed on a forum so personally :) If I say it here I have done it. No Bull poop from me. I'm not arguing, I'm stating what I see in MY flock of 10 years.I'm NOT P.C. If that offends please just block me :)

Rancher;  Hey, now that sounds really nice.  You would be a good fit for a job a purely poultry, be it writing or educating or just talking Chicken.  Hope that works out for you, let us know.  Sorry to hear about your crooked toes.  That breed is just so pretty.  What is the glass situation in europe?

Everyone else:  Yes, it was cold here this morning also.  I do not keep my frozen and cracked eggs in case some bacteria got in the cracks.  Just a bad thought to me, even if the egg is cooked.  We get one to three per night that have been cracked in this cold weather out of 15.  I do know that some of them are laid about 14 hours prior to collection. (Dratted work schedule!)  I know that because on my day off, I go to the coop at 8:00am instead of 6:00am and there are always 1 - 4 eggs laid by 8:00am.  Oh well, I am glad they are not all cracked.

Have some eggs lined up for the school hatching project.  The kids will have a blast with that (they always do, even if they have chickens at home).

Some of the chickens have still been going out in the pen in all this cold.  Those Red Stars are tough!

I freeze eggs (scrambled) on purpose.   They work.   I eat them.  So I would say that it is safe to eat frozen eggs....however you might want to wash the shell before it thaws (if it needs it), cuz the germs will get in the crack.

This new system is a pain. Hit the wrong key and bamm everything is gone.

As I started to say, there are a lot of qualified people interested in the Purely Poultry job. Me because it's an at home job and part time.  I am however free all day.  It involves customer service and order taking.

In other news the hoop coop was at 40* this afternoon and the waterer was still liquid.  There is no heat in it at all.  The other runs had frozen water but still liquid.

Take care gotta run, I'm making dinner tonight.
