NY chicken lover!!!! - Page 835

Well it is a cooler morning out there today. I hope everyone stays warm and drives safe.

Does anyone have any of the following for sale?

Peahen. --> A friend 2 years ago went to the dump and found a sickly bid walking around chirping. She took it home and it ended up being what we think is a India blue peacock. She is looking for a friend for him.

Lavender or Black Split Lavender Ameraucana Rooster. I bought a Quad, and the cockerel died. The folks I got them from were nice enough to give me their last extra boy. Well low and behold the bugger laid and egg. So I now have 3 hens and am looking for a boy. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Morning all!  Been reading through everyones posts and this group has been a busy one.  Ended up at the clinic yesterday to find out I have bronchitis and a sinus infection.  Antibiotics are wonderful things.  Now I can go to work at the pharm today and share the wealth since all my guests like to share theirs!  Henicillin can relate (cough, sneeze, here fill this for me).

Ginny--thanks for the pic of your hoop run.  You used rebar for the structure?  How did you bend it??

Love the pics of the babies.  Getting excited for mine to come.  We are expanding as well to cover all bases in case the economy tanks.  Can always trade eggs and meat for stuff or just eat them ourselves.  I;m not good at growing stuff.  I have a black thumb when it comes to plants but critters I am good at.

For fun I go out with grapes and proceed to throw the girls a single grape at a time.  This results in a game of keep away.  If I really want to torture them, I bite the grape in half and throw in a half at a time.  Of course I am standing outside the run because if I were inside, I would have a face full of chicken plucking the other half of grape out of my mouth!!!  I usually take pity and then throw in a handful.  Great entertainment though!  Aria--I usually rip up the bread in pieces and throw it into my pens.  Less fighting and more funny watching them run from piece to piece.  Even funnier when Little Man picks up a piece and drops it, calling to the girls in an attempt to impress them, and they ignore him and run to the pieces far away from him!  I wonder if it hurts his manly pride!!!  lol

Stay well everyone as it stinks to be sick,  Off to work.  No rest for the weary!

Incubator huh? I know where you can get hatching eggs, really close to your home. ;)
Starting plants- _ am going to start Cauliflower from seed. When does everyone start theirs indoors. Tips?
Selling 3 doz hatching eggs to a preschool today. Then I need to go buy feed.
Have a great day!

This reminds me I bought one of those mini green house things at TSC.  I plan to set it up in the livingroom.  We get the morning light through there as the sun comes up.

Now I have to tell you the broody hatched three chicks so far in the coop.  I took them and put them in the brooder til she's done and then I plan to put them back.  When I went out she was off the nest so it will be interesting to see what happens with the remaining eggs.   (I have a crate for her and will move her to that when I return the chicks to her)

Got snow last night and then it's supposed to go to 65 on Wednesday.  Would to God it would stay there for a few days so I can get some outside work done.

Feel better soon Madsen!!!!!

Someone mentioned preparedness in an earlier post.  Even if you don't feel the world is ending, it doesn't hurt to try to be a little more self-sustaining.  I decided to start up a blog to help people with self-sustainability and to give homesteader/homemaker type tips and tricks on cleaning, cooking, crafting and the like.

I just started it yesterday, and if anyone would like to learn how to "Make your own homemade liquid laundry detergent" you can check out my first post!  If you do make it - it will save you a ton of money.  It literally will cost only a couple pennies per load.  I think my next topic is dry laundry detergent and then I'll move on to fabric softeners and household cleaners.  I dunno.  There's a lot to cover!

we have been making our own detergent for many years now. Well my wife makes it! lol. Our goal has to become more and more self sufficient. I'll check out your blog.

We haven't bought home heating oil since 1990. All wood heat here. our hot water is made from a woodfurnace 24/7/365. Next thing to do to that is get a small solar setup to power the furnace electricity. On the long term plan is passive solar, homebuilt of course, for summertime hot water, and for suplimental heat in the winter . Both to cut down on firewood use.

Maden -  I agree with the co workers spreading things, If that is what you meant.  I'm very susceptible to colds and the like.  I wipe this thing down each time someone else uses it.   Hope you feel better soon.

Itsy - are you a "Preppy"?  They had an article on the telly this am about Preppies.  DW would never go for it, but I'll bet  many will when the price of food becomes unaffordable.  I don't expect the world to end but it will be a tough road if the price of gas hits $12 a gallon as I've been told.   We'll all be looking to get some chickens that forage for themselves if feed prices go up.  The only reason the price of eggs is still low in the store is the farms are taking a loss.  IMO.

Aria - you didn't ask but I got my Genesis 1588 from incubator warehouse.  But I would shop around if I was you of course.  Do yourself a favor and don't go for those "wafer" kinds.  Pain in the bum those buggers.  At least for me.
