Mine are pets. I eat their eggs, and I'm glad that using their eggs means I don't have to buy eggs from the grocery store as often, but they are primarily pets. I enjoy having them, watching them, and photographing them.

I guess I use them for fertilizer too. It's just that my 3 horses produce so much MORE fertilizer that I forgot about the 1 wheelbarrow full of soiled Chicken bedding that I get every month. Also, horse manure takes 4 months to become safe to use in your garden. Chicken manure takes 6 months. Do your research before you burn out your vegetables.

I have chickens for their eggs and as pets. They all have names and I have a veterinarian for them. I have heard from folks who are large chicken farmers that having a vet is very suburban. That's me, I call myself a typical suburban chicken lady. I let them live out their lives, even when they stop laying. I always have some newbies to give me eggs.
